Never having tried it before I know nothing about it, but chances are really low on that.
You are guided to the camp, it's not a nightdrive.
Then again, you might get lucky and be guided by staff that have the time for a leisurely drive, and stop for sightings. Most have families though or other stuff to do, so don't get your hopes up.

No spot lights allowed. You may ride in convoy if there are more than one vehicle.

If a special animal is in the road, you may be lucky. But it isn't designed as a game viewing experience.

hi,

Ill be arriving to the KNP on the 4.4.11 but there is a possibility that ill arrive just at the time of the gates are being closed... (18:00)

My first camp is berg-en-dal and im cant reach them in order to request a late arrival arrangment... (im arriving through malelane gate)
Anyone knows if they have a valid e mail i can use?

And whats exactly is the procedure - do i arrive at the gate and allowed to drive by my self to the camp or is there someone there waiting for me for an escort to the camp?

if it is an escort to the camp - does it cost extra - and how much ?

thanks again in advance for the help !!
cant wait !!

EJ is an Honorary Ranger, and can not help with late arrivals. ;)

Petronica Khanyile (petronicak @ sanparks.org) is the duty manager, she should be able to arrange the late arrival for you.
You will be collected at the gate, and escorted to camp. It is however not a free service, off the top of my head I think it costs R150.

Just saw this.....if you can call the camp before gate closing time to let them know you will be late it will be best. 0828021201 for the BnD duty manager. When you arrive at the gate the security personnel will notify the camp and someone will drive through to escort you in. You must arrive in time to be in camp by 2100 as after that the escort no longer applies and you have to wait for the morning.

After all these years on the forum and knowing about this service, something has just occurred to me.

What happens if you get a late transfer but reception is closed. How do you pick up the keys?

That is arranged between the duty manager and the escort. Your keys are either in the bungalow or given to the escort - they need to know which bungalow to take you to anyway! If camping they will help you find a spot.

Hello,

We'd like to come directly to KNP after landing from overseas.
Our international flight lands at 2 PM.
We prefer to continue to the park and sleep at a rest camp instead of staying a night in Johannesburg.
We found a flight from JNB to MQP at 5:30 that arrives after 45 min.

I read that the gates close at 5:30 but late arrivals can enter the park with ranger escort if we can arrive to the gate till 20:00.

Through which gate should we enter and which camp should we choose? (we are a family of 3 adults).
How much such an escort cost?

I appreciate your advice.
Thank you,
Sirenada

I think even the closest options will be tight in terms of time to get there by 8pm. I am not sure that Numbi gate is a great one to enter late evening (others could clarify), otherwise Malelane gate for Berg en Dal may be a good option. We had to enter there late in August last year. The staff were very accommodating when I rang in advance and we didn't wait long for an escort vehicle to arrive and accompany us to the camp. I am worrying that if you don't get out of the airport with your vehicle by 6.30-7pm you will find it hard to get there in time. You don't want to be rushing on unfamiliar roads at night. If your flight is a bit delayed then that will make it even more difficult. If it was me I think I would stay outside the park that first night and then get up quite early to get in the next day as soon as you can. You won't miss much that first night arriving late and will be tired anyway after your travelling. Better perhaps not to have the pressure of time constraints as soon as you get there.

Late entry is allowed until 21:00. As Threedogs has said Numbi gate for Pretoriouskop is not a good option late at night so I'd go for Malelane, and stay either at Malelane or Berg an Dal camps. BnD has three bed bungalows, not sure about Malelane.

Croc Bridge - Croc Bridge
Malelane - Malelane, Berg-en-Dal
Numbi - Pretoriuskop
Kruger - Skukuza
Orpen - Orpen, Maroela, Tamboti
Punda Maria - Punda Maria

Up till 21:00 @ R150.00 per car, though that price may have changed during the years.

homer.s - last year we needed an escort from Malelane gate to Berg n Dal after gate closing time. It is best to ring in advance an hour or so before arrival if you can. Tel: +27 (0)13 735 6106/7 .

what about EARLY DEPARTURE - we will be there in June when the gates do not open very early in the mornings and we might have to leave before opening time in order to make our flight from Nelspruit. Can this also be arranged? many thanks
