Where to stay in Kgalagadi? Which camp would be the first choice? And why? Which camp will be the second, third and so on choice and why? :hmz: Will like to get some opinions on this. Price or location? :hmz:

One important factor to consider imo is the lack of affordable accommodation at KTP
Kruger (the south) has many cheap options.

Quote from here.
I'm just wondering in general. :hmz: What are the criteria for staying at a place(camp)? :?

The luxury in KTP is higher than in KNP, so you pay more. Once you have accepted that you should have a look at the small camps, like Urikaruus.
Twee Rivieren is not to be forgotten though, for wildlife viewing it is one of the best camps.

picnic --there are not many camps in KTP and each and every one is special in its own way.

KTP is not Kruger and   will never be.

The camping option has only 3 camps -- Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata Mata -- to choose from (not talking the Bots side now).

Chalets -- you have some choices in the main camps, but the wilderness camps are all the same accommodation for that camp -- and are more expensive.

However, if you've ever tried to get a place at Urikaruus or Grootkolk, you'll know that they're permanently fully booked

So the criteria for going to KTP is fast becoming "where can I get in ?" :(

That is a big problem for me to P@m. Would also want to visit one of those places.(camps) But it is always fully booked.

For the last 8 years my trips to the park were carefully planned and booked a long time before the arrival date. That made it possible to book the camps I wanted including the wilderness camps. A top year for me was most of the camps in one visit, KTC, Kieliekrankie, Nossob, Grootkolk, Urikaruus and 2R
This year 2012 I was not able to make a reservation in advance and looking at the availability in the coming months I was getting in a depressed state of mind. No KTP this year that was so unbelievable for me, I had dreams at night of standing in front of the entrance gate at 2R and they would not let me in because I did not had a place to stay.. Jannie was making fun of me and a sign was errupted with not this year!!!!.... until ......
TODAY! I checked the availabilty calander again and little pieces of the puzzle felt into place and in 3 weeks time I will enter the park. Allthough it will only be a total of 5 days in KTP and only 3 different camps (2R, MM and Nossob) I know I will enjoy every minute of it. Karoo at the start and Augrabies in the end, I took my 5 days and booked. I know I'm going to sleep sweet dreams tonight
So picnic whatever is possible, take it, don't compare price and location, just being there will do it for me!

 Okay So we have not stayed at all of the Wilderness camps but my first choice would be Urikaruus followed closely by Gharagab (Not visited Grootkolk yet) ........and when it comes to the traditional camps - Nossob - the activity at the waterhole is WOW! Just our opinion!

Price or location?Always a toss up.

My suggestion would be that if your trip to KTP is short then lay out the extra money and spend as many nights at Urikaruus and Grootkolk as you can get.
These camps are really special and the experience is worth the extra cost.
If you can stay longer then incorporate some of the traditional camps, particularly Nossob.

When staying at the wilderness camps one tends to spend more time in camp waiting for the animals to visit the waterholes and less time driving around,so saving on fuel expenses.

@ Jonkers, Take what you can get. Very happy for you. :D (Glad the fright dreams stopped  )

@Munchin, Gharagab is also one of my choices. Nossop also

@Enrico, The only problem is that those two wilderness camps can't be booked on short notice, they are always fully booked for months in advance. :(

  Jonkers :D That's the way
Where ever I do stay, does not matters :D As long as I can visit the park. I even stayed previous years outside the park the first few nights, if I did not get space in the KTP.
AND TWEE RIVIEREN IS NOT ONLY A ENTRY POINT, IT IS A NICE PLACE TO STAY AND GAME VIEWING ARE EXCELLENT

SJ

P.S. But Grootkolk and Nossob are my favourite

I do not like the wilderness camps
You are not allowed to leave the accommodation after dark
Which is understandable, because they are unfenced, but i feel "locked" up

Picnic, any camp in KTP would be great 8) I have stayed in MM and TR and loved it  I also like to wander around the camps looking for what can be found but then again the wilderness camps are on my wishlist as the scenery from them is hard to beat based on the pictures I have seen, and the sightings

The Travel Tales makes one a bit
KTP is one of the parks where one can't be to choosy :naughty: Because they are always booked far in advance. :rtm:

Hi Guys ,

Firstly its been a while since I last posted on the Arid Parks forums so my apologies if this is being posted in the wrong place.

I've just booked for the 1st time a trip to Kgalagadi and will be staying the 28,29 April @ 2R in a FA2/4A.
Any suggestions if there is a specific unit I should request for that affords the best possible experience.
Havnt had the chance to view a map layout so unfamiliar with the camp.

Many thanks in advance.
