Hi Montse, we have been many times to Kruger with a big campervan like you are going to do.
But no problem anywhere.
Only the low maint.roads near Phala.
But keep in mind that sometimes the roads can be very corrugated so drive slowly, sometimes very slowly, but in general you can drive almost all the untarred roads.
From Berg en dal to Punda.

Hi all,

I'm thinking about hire a camper vehicle (Iveco Discoverer 4) to make Kruger.
But I have some doubts:
1) All the main camps have spots to park camper vehicles ? If not, which have or where can I find it out ?
2) This kind of vehicle has a good view to all 4 passengers ?
3) Are they good to take safari photos (from inside ?
4) Is there enough room to the luggage of 4 people to 15 days ?
5) Any other comments ?

We were in Kruger last summer with a big Motorhome, we are a family of 5 (3 of them teenagers!). I will try to answer your questions:

1) not all the main camps have spots for these vehicles; you must check the right camps before planning your trip at http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/ca ... hp/all.php

2) our Motorhome allow all of us to have a very nice view, but it was a 6 places motorhome.

3) yes, you will be able to take good pictures from inside the vehicle.

4) definitely NO, we used the bath room as a big (well, not so big to tell you the truth) wardrobe. We’ve never used the vehicle bathroom.

5) I recommend you to hire the biggest vehicle you can. The more space you have the more comfortable you will feel and routes in Kruger are good enough for this kind of vehicles.

We have a Discover4 motorhome and go to the park often...well as often as possible.
The last trip was 4 weeks South to North and amazing.

Great photo opportunities...we take out the mozi screen on front window.

4) Is there enough room to the luggage of 4 people to 15 days ?
If you mean the actual luggage I would say no..but if you pack items and then store luggage its ample.

5) Any other comments ?
We have tent camped,caravaned and chalets over the years...easily "Motorhome" IMHO the best way to go.

Based on that I decided for a Mercedes Sprinter 5 Berth to make the Kruger.
We are very ansious for the day we can have a nice breakfast with all that wildlife in the big rear window just as a picture in the wall :-)

A good tip I receveid is to use soft bags instead of hard luggage, so we can distribute the clothes and shoes in the compartments and the bags in the outside compartments.

Just want to say that we did the Kruger in a campervan in November 2010 ...
We hired a 6 berth for 3 of us, with the intention that our friend could use the Luton
(bed above the cab) ..
Well as we are all pensioners this didn't work well ..ie. she got up in it but had trouble getting down ..
Gave us a great laugh ... We sorted it our by my hubby & I on the double and she on the single .. And we LOVED the whole trip ...
Could camp next to fence & could stop by any waterholes during the day and have our lunch, while looking
through our panoramic windows.
One hint we got from a forumite was when you leave camp in the morning, leave your table & chairs so you can get back to the same area each evening.

Great tips and nice story
At first I would hire an Iveco Discoverer 4 as it have the two beds below ( no luton ).
But in the last moment it was booked so I changed to the Mercedes 5 berth and now we'll have to deal with it.
I'm a little concerned about that, but I think everything is going to be ok.

The tip about the table & chairs are very good.
I do it when I use a car with Roof Top Tents.
Very useful indeed ?

P.S.: As english is not my native language, could someone explain what is a "mozi screen" ?

I just want to amend what JaniceE said... all Camps that have "Camping spots" have spots for motor homes. However, some camps such as Olifants don't allow camping, so neither caravan, tent, nor motor home will find a spot there. (Balule is just around the corner though ).
Best to check the camps... if camping with or without electricity is available, you'll be able to park your motor home there...

My wife and I are planning to visit Kruger in a rented campervan/motor home for 8 days at the beginning of August this year. Having never done this before, we have a few queries and would welcome advice or suggestions from anyone with experience of this.
Presumably we will need to book and pay for a site/pitch for each night and each camp that we visit. At that time of the year is it necessary to decide in advance which camp we will be in each night or are we able to be flexible and decide as we go along? If we do have to book everything in advance, is it permissible to change our itinerary if the need arises. How easily can this be done?
Do most camps have electrical points for camper vans? And what other facilities can we use? Ablution blocks presumably. Kitchens? Laundry? Braai facilities?
We will probably enter in the south of the reserve and will not travel any further north than Letaba. Any answers, ideas, recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Kruger novices

August can be quite busy, so I would advise you to have a look at the availability pages soon.
I would definitely book in advance for the nights you want.
You may be able to swap nights when you get there (ask at reception) but I wouldn't rely on being able to do so.
Before you arrive it should be easy enough to switch by emailing Reservations.
I think you can also swap using the online booking system too.

Kitchens have hot plates and geysers of boiling water, no ovens or fridges though.
Most camps have laundry facilities except Tsendze and Balule(?).
All sites have a braai.
Not all sites have electricity so if you need it then make sure you book the correct site.
Except for Tsendze and Lower Sabie none of the sites are allocated and work on a first-come, first-served basis.
With a motor home you may find it easier to pitch a small tent to "mark your territory" if you stay for more than one night in a camp.

Many thanks for the very prompt response! Really helpful. It does look as is the weekends in August are already heavily booked, so we will take your advice on that and get organised soon.

Is there a braai available at each individual 'pitch' in the camping area, or is it a communal braai area?

Sara has helped you with your queries - except I do not think you can pre book a specific site at Lower Sabie either.
Only at Tsendze; the rest of the camps one gets to choose from open sites.
Its a good idea to try and change camp early in the mornings and then you should have a good choice of sites. Early being about 9am to arrive at the new camp.

I want to urge you too to book asap.
August is a popular time, and bookings are going to fill up very soon.
I would suggest you try and spend 2 nights per camp at least and recommend you try get Lower Sabie, Satara and Letaba and then maybe include Skukuza.

Each camp site has a braai facility.
