I had both a sunset drive and a night drive last night...
Sunset Drive:
The first event of the day was me being horribly pooped on by a
millipede.
We found out we had just missed four
cheetahs and a
spotted hyena by minutes. But we stayed around as it was the guests first time in the park and we were watching the
Springbok and the
Wildebeest. Then we saw something was watching them-
Leopard! It was a little far off, but easily identifiable through binoculars and we watched with excitement seeing whether it would try to catch anything. Sadly it missed its chance with some young wildebeest and a crying
jackal eventually gave it away as it got dark.
We went on to see more
jackals, springhare, scrubhare, African Wildcat and
Spotted Eagle Owls.
I took out a Night Drive as soon as we got back to camp from the sunset drive:
Began with a
Verreaux’s Eagle Owl in Camp.
It had gone all quiet, but while we were watching a
Black Back Jackal, a huge
Spotted Hyena tore across the road just feet in front of us!
We saw several
African Wild Cats, Spotted Eagle Owls, Springhares, Scrubhares, Cape Foxes, and some
Bat Eared Foxes at a distance.
When we were nearly back at Twee Rivieren Gate (a little late...) I caught two pairs of eyes in the road up ahead. I first thought Porcupine, as they seemed quite large and dark and there were
two of them. As we got a little closer...
BROWN HYENA! So rare and special to see one, let alone a pair. Never seen two together before. And two of our guests had come on the drive solely to try and find a brown hyena. The hyenas were actually fairly relaxed and continued down the road to Samevloeing. I turned around and followed them for a while, but didn’t want to end up chasing them. So we stopped where we’d seen them pasting some grass and tried to find their pastings.
Probably my best night in KTP
