It is definately the scenic H10 past Tshokwane. There are 5 cheetahs that are spotted almost daily on this route. It will also take you past a beautiful viewpoint. You can stop at Tsokwane for lunch or breakfast.

Is it realistic ,to drive from Phabeni gate to Letaba comfortably in one day .Or does it make more sense to drive from Hazyview to Phalaborwa gate then over to Letaba?

Hi we did Mopani to Phabeni gate last week.... can do but it took us 12 hours stopping for bird and animal sightings. Plus a stop at Letaba, which by the way is looking fine after the floods. Enjoy....

Yes definitely!

We drove Phabeni to Lower Sabie to Olifants in 12 hours.
Letaba is 30 odd kms from Olifants and the Lower Sabie detour I think was and extra 70 kms.
I stopped almost for every animal and bird to take photos and I stopped at every camp/picnic spot for loo breaks.

Hi All,

A quick question, how long is the drive from Orpen to Shigwedzi??
I think its 229km, but not sure.
Do you think its worth doing that drive or should we rather keep looking for something closer to Shigwedzi?

Hi Ils

At 25km/h average, and twelve hours between gate opening and closing time, it is just doable. But going to be a very long day. 9 hours drive, but lots of lovely camps/spots to stop off at along the way. So if you do it, be sure to leave as the gates open.

You might also find DISTANCES BETWEEN MAIN KRUGER NATIONAL PARK CAMPS AND GATES handy, Ils.

Hi Ils :D
I did it in June last year. And made it in time to pitch my tent and all :D
I do admit, that I drove 40-45km/hour between Letaba and Shingwedzi in the heat of the day.
But I would say you won't have a problem from Orpen-Shing in a day

I occasionally do Pafuri to Orpen, usually takes me 10-11 hours via Timbavati. Orpen Shingwedzi is eminently doable if you hit the gate as it opens.

A warm welcome to you, Sethch :D I do hope that you have a marvelous stay.

I would say that on the first day I would enter at the Phabeni Gate and travel from there to Lower Sabie. The Phabeni route allows for more time in the Park and offers lovely possibilities.

As for Lower Sabie to Satara, I rather like the main routes. The H10 goes through many diferent eco zones and aslo offers wonderful sighting opportunities. Time permitting, take a detour to the Mlondozi picnic site to enjoy the view. The H10 also has the Nkume look out and the is another small detour to Orpen dam.

Tshokwane has always been a favourite site to take a breather. I hope that is is fully operational again after the floods. The route from Tshokwane to Satara is also an interesting and recommended route.

Welcome to the forum Sethch. As has already been said drive slowly and just take it all in. There is no rush, you are on holiday so relax. Stop and look at everything and you will be amazed at what you find.

Some places to see along your route include Lake Panic, near Skukuza, Sunset Dam near Lower Sabie, Nkumbe Lookout, between LS and Tshokwane and Orpen Dam near Tshokwane.

The tar roads between Skukuza and Lower Sabie and Lower Sabie and Satara are well worth travelling along, although they can be very busy. There's a couple of gravel road detours along the Skukuza-Lower Sabie road that get you closer to the river and are well worth taking.

If you have time when you get to Satara, try a trip along the S100. For some its a game magnet, not so for others. But regardless, its one of my favourite roads in the park, just because of the scenery, to me it screams Africa.

Near Satara Nsemani Dam and Girivana waterholes are always worth a look. And don't miss the Sourthernmost Baobab tree on your way to Satara.
