Pretty sure the raptor I got a glance at yesterday over Pinelands was a ybk!

Looks like an immature Yellow-billed Kite.

Anne-Marie/Nial

Did you consider juvenile african harrier hawk in your ID. The leg length and the "bulky back heavy" body shape seem to give me this hint?

Okay,

Just seen the topic and I feel I must share this with you. I work in Ethiopia (Makelle). Here is a HUGE concentration of YBK around I will try and put some pics on. At any stage of the day when I stand on the roof of the office I can count 5 to 10 of the flying around. At sunset they tend to get together and at a stage I counted 30 of them together flying in a circle. What do they eat except for a mouse or 2 ? :hmz:

I know this is not SANP related but it puzzles me that there is such a lot of them here together and down south not as much

:hmz:

Could be that the migration is in progress?

Are your YELLOW BILLED KITES still in your area or have they disappeared for 4 or 5 months.
I haven't seen many recently in or around Durban.
They may have taken off before Irina hit us. :o
