Left Nelspruit at 16:00 with lots of traffic on N4-7 and only got to Malelane gate at 17:00. Herd of Ellie's in river bed at gate. Left gate at 17:10 and warned the family from Cape Town that it is a 15 min. drive to Berg & Dal and if we see anything it is a question of photograph and go. First sighting LIT 1km from gate. Not a good pose or photo!



On the S110 herd of Buffalo and got to camp 2 min before closing. Made a big bush TV for this lowvelder can’t handle the cold. Heard Scops and Hyena during the evening.

While loading the car Lions were making a big racket outside camp but didn’t find them. Left camp at 6:05, Ellie on loop to S110. Hyena, White Rhino and lots of Vultures on S110. On S120 Steilberg stopped for Kudu, when about to drive off, when this Leopard came and posed for me next to the side of the road.



Up to Afbrand (Afsaal) for breakfast. More White Rhino and lots of general game on the H3, H2-2, S114, S23, back to H3.


Biyamity Weir

Found Secretary bird and Ground Hornbill on H3 and H1-1 to Skukuza.





We spent a good hour at Lake Panic Bird Hide and I struggled to get them out off there.



Lots of general game on the S1 and S65. Saw Black Rhino on H1-1 just before Klipspringer Koppies.



Bird count for the day was 76 with no new ones to tick off.

Saw the same leopard early morning on the 23rd with a youngster of about 1 year old! Unfortunately the sun made photography impossible! They seem to spend a lot of time in the area (maybe they have a kill stacked somewhere closeby or just like that particular marula!). Anyway great pics and trip. Spoke to one of the rangers on the wilderness trials a year ago and he said that in a couple of years time, black rhino will be just as plentifull as white rhino since their population growth at present is 8%! Seem to be coming true sooner than later (excellent pic of the ubejane - shangaan for black rhino).

Thank you guys. This was a very special sighting and only my third sighting of Black Rhino in all the years visiting KNP. My previous sighting was about 7 years ago close to Satara.No Photo



On our way out, the youngster was at the same spot in the thicket with just the tail visible. Apparently the have been in the area for a while.
