13th September

Although there have been many road works on our way from Mountain Zebra National Park to Addo Elephant National Park
we arrive still too early for our accommodation. So we decide to have a visit to the park.
After day visitor registration at the main camp office we see the park's shop and get some cookies and drinks.
Soon we leave the camp at the gate towards the park. It is very exciting to be back.

At the viewpoint at Domkrag Dam we sit down at a bench to rest with our cookies and drinks.
This is unbelievable!
The air smells like inside a glass with honey. There are yellow flowers all over the area and ellies enjoying the same.
No matter to which direction you turn there are ellies enjoying fresh grass with yellow flowers.
It seems all the ellies of Addo are currently in this area.

Domkrag Dam gets busy more and more. There are many thirsty elephants arriving.

Some already leave to get more of the fresh green ...

... but there are still thirsty fellows at the dam.

Not much time for a cookie for me! Such a lot to see today!

Out of nowhere suddenly a black-backed jackal appears at the scene.

Image

The jackal passes the skull with horns of a kudu, lays down in the grass and then gets more of the nice smell of this area.

Image

Image

Image

The jackal seems to think "Nobody is watching me!"

It is very peaceful to watch the ellies taking their way through the flowers.
Still very relaxing for me to see these pictures ...

Image

Image

Another elephant appears and is welcomed by the others.

Image

Image

The ellie takes the way to the water.

Image

Image

Image

These kudus enjoy the ocean of flowers as well ...

Image

Image

... and I can't get enough of the wonderful views around Domkrag Dam.

We finally leave the viewpoint to see more of the park.
A black-headed heron walks near the road.

Image

This poor little dung beetle lost the dung ball on the tar road.

Image

Image

Those dung balls seem to get very fast when the dung beetle tries to cross the road.

We arrive at the area with two mud bath pans. I never saw ellies so close to each other.
The pans seemed to be small.
You can easily identify who recently got this special skin care.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The little ellies have a lot of fun ...

Image

... but even a mud bath has an end.

This leopard tortoise enjoys the green grass at the side of the road .

Image

When I take a landscape picture I notice a yellow mongoose is crossing the road.

Image

You can see it jump into the flowers ...

We see a very quiet Hapoor Dam. A leopard tortoise walks along the bank.

Image

Two terrapins enjoy the spring sun.

Image

On our way back to Gwarrie Pan there is another black-backed jackal.

Image

Image

Image

What does this nice fellow smell in the grass?
The mouth waters.

Gwarrie Dam is very quiet when we arrive, but later this beautiful ellie arrives.

Image

Image

Image

Image

We see more kudus in the area near Rooidam and decide to return to Domkrag Dam.

Stripes and flowers ...

Image

Image

Image

It seems the stripes of this zebra have nearly been washed away. :hmz:

We watch more ellies enjoying the flowers. It seems all the ellies are around Domkrag Dam today.

Image

Image

What a surprise! This ellie suddenly lays down to take a nap. :o

Image

Image

Image

We see the belly go up and down when the grey giant takes a breath.
This ellie really is in a safe place.

Back to Domkrag Dam viewpoint this bird is in it's best form.
But there are no cookies for birds.

Image

Image

Image

Domkrag Dam is shortly visited by kudus ...

Image

Image

... until the next ellies arrive.

On our way back to the gate we stop many times to watch more ellies.
These two walk on the road directly to our direction.

Image

"Good bye zebra, see you again tomorrow."

Image

It is time to leave for our accomodation at Zuurberg Mountain, but we will be back the next day.
One more day in the ocean of flowers. :D
When I close my eyes in the evening I see ellies and flowers ... flowers and ellies ....

14th September

Back at Addo we experience a very quiet Domkrag Dam.
The area is still in wonderful colours, but no ellies at all.
We decide to do the Gorah Loop this morning.
The resident black-backed jackal looks for prey.

Image

The area is busy with kudus. Wonderful horns ...

Image

We see warthogs enjoying the fresh green together with kudus.

Image

There are purple blurs of colour ...

Image

... and our first ellie for today.

Image

Carol's Rest is quiet too. Some far away zebras, kudus and this nice ibis are around

Image

Soon we are on the way to Zuurberg Lookout Point.

These kudus prefer purple.

Image

Image

At Zuurberg Lookout Point there are many visitors enjoying a wonderful view.

Image

There are only far away elephants.

Image

Soon we are back to Domkrag Dam Viewpoint.
Unbelievable that the area was so busy yesterday and is so quiet today.

We return to the Main Camp to rest with view to the waterhole.
Today we are lucky and watch this ellie satisfy it's thirst.

Image

It takes long until the grey giant disappears into a bush close to the waterhole.

We decide to look for ellies at Gwarrie Pan and are successful.
There are many youngsters having fun.

Image

Image

Image

A little ellie appears at the banks accompanied by mum.

Image

The little one seems to be afraid of the water. Or is it the company in the water?
Nevertheless the little one leaves guarded by mum without having a bath.

Image

Image

Two youngsters start quarreling.

Image

Suddenly there is big excitement ... Look at the ellies tails!

Image

These ellies are waiting at the banks until the others are leaving the water.

Image

Not far away from this very busy area there are these three ellies enjoying a less busy bath.

Image

We stay at Gwarrie Pan until the bathing is over and the ellies start to feed on the green around Gwarrie Pan.

Rooidam is quiet and we soon continue watching the ellies feeding in the area
of Gwarrie Pan.

Hasn't this ellie a smiling on it's face?

Image

TOO CLOSE!!!

Image

I already see the ellie sit on my lap. Oh it's only my zoom.

No lion sighting this time, but we came closer.
When we looked at the sighting board at the Main Camp
we saw the lions had been in the area around Spekboom Hide this morning.
But when we arrived at Spekboom Hide it was very quiet and no lions around.
We visited Jack's Picnic Site. It is a wonderful picnic site, but it was very busy.
Many school children visit the park today.
I can't remember that this picnic site was there during our last visit in 2008.

Now it was time to leave the park again.
On our way back to the Main Camp we meet this warthog busy enjoying the fresh green.

Image

Soon we are back to our accommodation in the Zuurberg Mountain.

This nice kingfisher is waiting for me.

Image

... and as I watch this lovely bird there is someone else keeping my company. :hmz:
