Dear All,

It is with a level of sadness that I inform you that Balule was quite extensively damaged by the 18 January 2012 flood as the Olifants (to my best knowledge) reached record levels not previously recorded (in history of the park). Even the old historic huts have been damaged with doors washed away. Kitchen and ablutions also damaged extensively and then fence of course. Will require careful thinking and planning to restore to former glory!

Warm regards.

Dear All,

Due to 18 January 2012 floods, Tamboti Tented Camp extensively damaged with about half of the 40 tents with flood damage - yes those views will certainly be different. Somehow sad to me as I was very involved during the planning and construction phase and this was a product we were proud of! I am confident the renewed tents will again be attractive and popular!

Kind regards.

The lower dam was washed away, but the top one where the hide is situated is OK. Some minor damage at the hide. But you will be able to take your photos.

Here is the topic: Lake Panic

Many thanks for the comparison Joep. The power of water . . . .

Very sad that there has been so much damage to Balule and, to a lesser extent, Tamboti. I'm sure that with the expertise we have seen in the past, the rebuilding/refurbishing/repair work will result in equally appreciated accommodation. The views - growth happens no matter what so they may be different but one day they will be lovely again.

I agree. Don't modernise the camp. And not because I've ever been there, but because there should be something for everyone. Some people want commercial, modern camps to live in. That's fine. There are plenty of those. But some people want the more rustic, basic approach, and they too should be catered for.
