Roycraig I think they are pretty rare in the south. Always see them around satara, Mopani, and on my last trip North of Shingwedi. It seems they are more rare south

From my second trip a few weeks ago, we stopped first at Skukuza. On 19th Sept, we had taken a wrong turn and ended up on the H4-1 if memory serves. After turning round at the picnic site, watching the hyena sleeping on the side of the road, we carried on up the road.

About 5-10 mins up from the picnic site, there were impala everywhere stamping their feet and making this barking sound and all looking in the same direction. Two cars were parked and said that a leopard had just that second grabbed one.

Upon parking, looking down the hill and into a bush was the leopard, we saw him choking the impala and kill it and then he proceeded to rip out his rear end - grusome but mesmorising. I have one good picture from the many I took, so once I suss out how to load them up, I will share it.

Thanks

Louise

This was taken December near the transport Dam turnoff, He was so close to the car that I almost couldn't fit his face into the picture. You'll see my car's door frame in the one pic. :D . Roughly about 200m prior to the leopard sighting, Wild Dogs were resting under trees next to the road, couldn't get nice pics though. The next day there were cheetah sightings and Lion sightings in the same area. So yes, if you're going to Skukuza be sure to visit Transport Dam area. The Lions in my pictures was taken on Maroela Loop, I never miss Maroela loop when going to Skukuza, We've seen brilliant Lion & Wild Dog sightings on this loop.

I think you should have a look at the pin up board at Skukuza to see where people are seeing animals

We were there a month ago and had the following sightings:
Wild dogs (± 13) at the road to Tamboti just outside Orpen. They were lying under the bushes.
We saw 3 male lion kill a buffalo outside Skukuza.
Along the H1-1 between Skukuza and P/Kop, we saw cheetah (seems they are frequenting Naphi boulders), a female leopard, with a cub, near the entrance to Shitlhave dam, A male leopard in the same area between Shitlhave and Transport dams, a hyena den about 800 m from the Transport dam turnoff, the usual ellies and other large grey animals, loads of waterbuck.
There was also a leopard on the S7 (connecting road between Pkop and Doispane rd), a cheetah near Mestel dam and LOADS of birds.

Hope you enjoy it, whatever you see!.

Almost back at home from Skukuza this morning, alive and well! Wild dogs just outside camp this morning, sunset drive 6 lions at bridge near to day visitor area. My advice explore all river roads near camp. Kruger so dry, not much water in veld. Good luck!
