We were really lucky to see a servel on our very first visit to KNP. Not a great pic but still loved seeing it. This was on the loop close to Lower Sabie just coming in to sunset.

We also got to see a beautiful sighting of a AWC the same trip. We turned a corner on the S100 one very misty morning at first light and he was standing right in the road - just there for a second, so no time for a photo.

We saw a genet on several occasions while waiting at the gate in Skukuza in the morning. It was always fleeting - but still special.

During my last trip to KNP I had my 1ste DAY serval sighting while driving on the S29 near Lower Sabie around 5 in the afternoon. Had it all to myself for around 10 min until it disappeared in the long grass. Pics a bit blurred was driving and taking pics while the serval was walking quite fast. Was fortunate to see it as the side he was on was burned so the grass nice short and green when he crossed the road he disappeared in the long grass almost immediately.

We saw this little guy in 2008 on the h10 road near Lower Sabie. He was amazing and allowed us to follow him for a while along the road!

My SO and I have just returned to the UK from a 9 day trip to the Kruger for our 25 year anniversary and thought we should share a very special sighting with you all. We'd spent the previous night, last Saturday, at Lower Sabie and following information gathered from the forum decided to drive the S29 and the S128. The morning had started well with 2 cheetah just south of the Mlondozi turn and 2 white rhino further up the road; one of whom demonstrated the use of a midden just for us.
We were happily driving south down the S128 thinking about breakfast, around 8:10am, when we spotted a cat trotting down the road. After a quick scan with binoculars and a check of the Christo Joubert & Others guide book we followed the serval down the road. It even popped off the road for a minute and came out with its own breakfast, a blue starling and continued down the road. thankfully I managed to get a couple of pictures taken before it finally headed into the sunrise.

I'm afraid to say that both pictures are from the back but we did not want to disturb the serval too much by chasing it down the road. It was an excellent start to the day that went on to include two lion prides as mentioned by Elsa in her current trip report. The Lower Sabie pride had cubs with them and there were actually six ladies at the dam by the end of the day along with two elephants.

What a great sighting! :D

I am wondering if it is the same one we saw last year in September after stopping at Mlondozi. Our route that morning was H10, S129, S28! We also were not able to get great pics but it was our first serval and very exciting.

Thanks for sharing.

Great sighting Welshboy

June/July 2010 we spent a night at Pretoriuskop. SO and son went to watch a world cup game in Nelspruit and my 1 daughter and I opted to rather go on a game drive...the 'big truck' was full of foreigners, I think the 2 of us were 2 of 4 'locals' on the vehicle. As luck would have it we saw a Serval, the 2nd one ever in the wild, and we have been on bush holidays every year for the last 15 years!!!
Well...the 2 of us were besides ourselves with excitement. Unfortunately no :cam: ...too far and too dark.
On getting back to camp, members of a group sitting next to us stated they were dissatisfied as they had not seen anything special...I could not contain myself and told them about how rare it is to see a Serval and that they would probably not see one again, they turned around and said...
"So it really was special, we thought the guide was bluffing us!" :wall:

Wow, Welshboy!!! Superb and thanks so much for sharing. Serval have such a beautiful coat pattern!!!!
(I have only seen a very distant serval on a night drive from satara)

Serval are HIGH on my wishlist for coming december trip. I gather from combing through the forums that area between LS and Tshokwane is the best chance of seeing serval. As there are quite a number to roads in this area, what route N of LS would forumites recommend to increase one's chances??? Same route as welshboy S29 then S128? (I realise it always comes down to right place right time)

And early morning preferable to late afternoon?

Thanks in advance!
