You are doing a great job with the big tuskers Aat! We have printed out the pictures of the 10 biggest tuskers from your thread, to see if we could find any of them during our last trip in September. Unfortunately we did not succeed - either because none of them were tuskers, or we just don't know how to identify them. :( But we will continue trying!

Duke I never met you. But you made every visit to Kruger worthwhile, even if we searched in vain for you.

Heaven is richer, Earth is poorer now. You made an impact on our lives. you were a legend.

I've seen stats on Duke's tusks.

His left tusk is the longest ever recorded in Kruger. A whopping 321cm!! 4cm longer than Shawu's left tusk which held the previous record.
Right tusk: 293cm

The combined weight is the 2nd heaviest ever recorded in Kruger. 140.4kg. 2kg less than Mandleve's.

A Magnificent animal and a legend he is.

Hope to see them in the Elephant museum in Letaba soon. Would be a fitting tribute to this once majestic animal.

Hi Wildtuinman,

Can you please also post on this site the circumferences and weights and length of the individual pieces of the tusks - I am really interested to know as much as possible of this old man.

Hi,

I would like to know when exactly Duke's tusks will be put on display in the Letaba Elephant Hall?

Thanks,

The Times yesterday reported that Duke's tusks weighed a combined 140.5kg

http://www.timeslive.co.za/scitech/2011/11/01/duke-tusks-break-records

This surely can't be correct, can it? When you look at the weights of the Magnificent Seven (http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/elephants/tuskers/magnificent7.php) the heaviest combined was Joao at 130kg (although I think this may be an estimate as Joao's tusks were never found) and Kambaku at 127.2kg. Shawu (who previously held the record for longest tusks) only weighed in at a measly 103.5kg.

If it is right, then Duke truly was a wonder of nature and anyone lucky enough to have seen him can surely count themselves most fortunate indeed.

The weight of 140.5kg is mentioned all over the media and on the forums. It seem to be the correct weight although Sanparks said that they will confirm the weight of the tusks.

We don't always believe that what we see are actually history in the making.

I read in the Beeld newspaper that there are plans to put up replicas of Duke's tusks at Croc Bridge.

(use Google translate to translate from Afrikaans)

That will be great if the plan is carried out!
