Eliz, sorry I looked at flying to Nelspruit directly from CT ... but I have since checked flying directly to Hoedspruit from CT, and return it is also over the top ... for mid Nov, return for one:
Base fare

ZAR 4230
Taxes and
Surcharges

ZAR 2034
Total

ZAR 6264

That is going via ORT on the up flight, and direct back to CT.

Yes, I also looked at the prices for that flight a while back, and think they are outrageous! Even O R Thabo to Hoedspruit is over the top. :x

CPT-HDS, JNB-HDS and JNB-PHW are monopoly routes, with a very high percentage of overseas tourists heading to and from private game lodges. The airlines concerned, SAX and Airlink, have no problem with ripping these passengers off.

If you book these flights in SA, you may sometimes find availability in the discounted fare buckets, but if you book overseas you almost without fail have to settle for a full-fare ticket. The other day I was charged €359 for a return to Phalaborwa, that's just shy of R4,000.00.

It also could be partially due factors of aircraft size , utilisation , average occupancy .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

It is, but I prefer Hoedspuit Eastgate, because the descent usually takes you right over Mariepskop and the escarpment, affording spectacular views. Depending on the runway, you then fly either over Kapama or the AFB reserve. Phalaborwa is pretty cool too, you can get great views of the big hole. Best of all is the Pafuri dirt strip. SANParks being SANparks, they have devised a nice and complicated descent procedure which takes you straight past Mabyeni mountain and then over the Limpopo floodplain with all its pans, before decending over the ridge to the strip.

Honestly if I were you Id enter at orpen gate as its not far from hoedspruit and drive down to paul kruger gate from the inside of the park its alot safer, the drive between hoedspruit and paul kruger can be a bit dodgy if you dont know the area, as for distance just google 'how many km's from Hoedspruit airport to paul kruger gate at the kruger national park' it will give you the stats :)
Im still In LOVE with my Kruger!

SL is quite right, if you have the time.............much nicer to be in the park

However if your time is limited the 50kph limit may not give you time.

If you have to travel Hoedspriut to Kruger Gate the road quality is good, but the vast area around Bushbuckridge can be difficult driving, beacuse there are often pedestrians and animals on the road, so just be careful and stick to the speed limits!!!

We drove that route last month, and it will take you about two and a half to three hours from the airport to Kruger Gate.
