Advice please! I've booked a hut, BG2, for later this year. Any recommendations on which hut has a nice view?

Herman, I haven't been yet, but the units with a river view are marked as BG2U, as identified on the camp map.

Some of these nasty mods will probably remove this post asap (and ban me!!!) but here goes:

Reporting from Lower Sabie.

Just spent two hours at Sunset Dam. It is an overcast day so not the best lighting for photography, but still an extremely rewarding morning. One needs to get to Sunset Dam as the gates open.

Two Fish Eagles fishing. Five Pied Kingfishers fishing. Numerous waders and other birds. Hippos returning to the water. Baboons barking and romping next to the dam. Fish jumping out of the water. Crocs fishing. One croc fulfilled my SO's dream and came face to face with him with 2 metres between them and lunged out of the water as he caught a fish. Lions roaring in the distance. A few hundred metres away, wildebeest and zebs and ellies.

Yesterday at a dam just half an hour away, three rhino and buffaloes.

Need I say more?

We have travelled the length of the park these past two and a half weeks and this is certainly the area with the most game at the moment.

Welcome to the forums Roy! :yaya:

Plenty good places to go, but be especially vigilant just under Lower Sabie, where the S28 meets the tar road. On the right (coming from LS) there is a little canyon with a river (the Mativuhlungu) where there is a resident leopard.

Now I hope you don't mind if I merge this with the Lower Sabie topic I hope?

Hello, all. I'm new to these boards and trying to get my bearings around Kruger.

For the past several months I've been trying to make reservations for our group and it's been a bit difficult, what with the time differences--it seems I'm up every morning at 2 (our time) in order to make a call to the SanParks reservations office as it opens SA time.

Faithfully I've been checking the website on what seems to be an hourly basics and today a listing for a FU4V cottage came up. However, I can't find this on the LS map, all I can find is the FQ5 cottages. These FU4Vs are said to have a veranda with a perimeter (view?), but I'm quite baffled as to what the view might be, as I can't even locate the cottages!

Can anyone advise what these are like? I've read some poor reports about the FQ5 units and since this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us, I'd like it to be a pleasant impression of Kruger.

Thank you.

Kimanjome welcome to the forum and hope you find this forum interesting like we all do, the FU4V units at lower sabie are brand new units built at the camp,i have never stayed or seen them, but the fact that they brand new, they got to be nice, also these units are river facing.

Hi there

I finally managed to book a night in Lower Sabie for the first time ever! The 2 units that I booked are BD2U. Has anyone stayed in one of these recently?

Reading the forum, I see that there has been some renovations done and also some complaints about the units being too close together? (i.e noisy etc)

Just needed some advice if I should rather opt for a family bungalow in Berg en Dal rather that the BD2U units?

Thanks for the help!

Yahya, a good question.

Most directions are good from LS, but it depends on what you are looking for.

Cheetah - S28 - go south and turn left after a few KM towards CB. Also H10 north across the river.
Leopard & Lion - tar roads to CO or Skuk - opposite direcrtions - your choice
White Rhino - Tar road to CB
Black rhino - H10 area
Wild dog - Tar road to CB - good luck!
Serval - S28 & Duke waterhola area & H10
Elephant & buffs - any road

Morning or evening are almost intercangeable, but the earlier the better for cheetah.

No guarantees, just experience.

Hey Yahya :D

Trip Reports show the H10 tar road going North to Tsokwane, and the s28 tar road going South towards Croc Bridge to be good areas for cheetah 8) The open grassland not only looks good for cheetah, but people are seeing them there

I would recommend driving further routes in the morn, and shorter in the afternoon if you are one to relax in the heat of the day. 8)

Thus:
Morn- H4-1 to Skuks and saltjie road back
Afternoon - H4-2, s28 back

or
Morn - H10 to tsokwane, and the dirt roads back
Afternoon - H4-2, s28 back

Keep your eyes peeled near LS in the water for otters!! :D
Keep a watchful eye at the H4-1/S28 junction for the resident leopard! :D
Try your luck shining a spotlight into the bush from the fence. Some formites have seen Civet doing this

Grantmissy, indeed it was wonderful :D

I stayed in tent 27, wonderful views of the river.

On my way I passed 2 romantic Leopard pairs. This happened in a space of 20 minutes. Four Leopards in 20 minutes  now that is a record to beat.

Tomorrow is my last night and I will be staying in the one bedded hut. I have stayed there before and it is possibly Kruger's best kept secret.

Hi kujo!

Look in This thread - great thread with links to the camp's maps - showing where each type of unit is located, and with pictures of specific units. Follow the easy links on page 1 of the thread...
