Your bat is an Egyptian Free Tailed Bat (Nycteris thebaica)

It is the only Slit Faced Species that occurs in Zimbabwe

Nick- I must apologise,

I was thinking of Botswana when ID'ing your bat.

In Zim, you get many species of Slit Faced bats and they can only be identified by measuring them by their ear length.

But the chances are highly likely that your bat is Common Slit Faced due to the fact that it is the most common.

Where was this bat seen?

Its a member of the horseshoe family, but will need to know where it was found in roder to make an accurate ID

Sorry - forgot to post the location! It was seen in the Mavhuradona area, 150km north of Harare.

Ok your bat could be many species, as most of our horseshoe species overlap in Zim. One would need to take various measurements etc to ID this bat.


So the best i can tell you for an ID is that it is a Horseshoe Bat, a Rhinolophus

I looked outside yesterday during a storm and saw this poor little bat lying on the ground, very wet! I picked it up and gave it something to hang on, and by evening it was flying around the room, good as new. It found it's way outside eventually.
My question is: What bat is it? It was very small - the body was approximately 5cm long. Any idea?
