What a great performance of that cat! And such wonderful pics. It looks like a young leopard. Reminds me of our leopard-little pumbaa sighting last november. Can't wait for our next trip in three weeks time. Your pics makes the waiting much easier to bear.

Wow! What a great sighting!

I really didn't know that there were cane rats in Kruger! My dad was in Kruger last week and was having breakfast at the Skukuza day visitors section and he said that "large rat looking things" were running around his feet. I was like: Huh??? what animal is that? So he must have seen cane rats then?

Great pics Anne-marie.....just proves what opportunistic predators they are. Guess that is why they are so successful.

 it was a great sighting... I stay until he finished and vanished through the bush... he searched several time to climb up a tree, but no tree was big enough... for my pleasure (not for the kill... for the pictures)
he ate exactly like a cat... shaking the rat etc... superb opportunist predator :D

Can you give me little help with this creature. I was told it is a Cane Rat, can you confirm ? Then can you tell me if it is a native in Kruger or a feral out of the cane fields. Seen at about 5.00pm on a gravel road near Pretorius Kop. About 25cm long, excluding the tail and rather solid looking.

Hi Dijo - I would agree with Cane Rat. They do occur naturally in Kruger.
