I have been living in Dubai now for three years and before I moved to the Middle East.
I used to visit Kruger at least four times a year.
Unfortunately being so far away makes regular visiting a little more difficult.
With great joy I planned an epic two week adventure and decided to take a few friends along to share my love of Kruger with.

And so, after being away from Kruger for just over three years, I was reunited with this beloved bushveld in January 2011.
An extremely emotional and happy reunion.

We hired a big old Volksie bus and the adventures began.
One of the first things I did was unpack my favourite Map of the Park which I bought in 1999 and showed my fellow travelers all the spots we were going to visit as well as explaining that we could even "alight from our vehicle" at certain places.
One of my favourite "alighting places" is the Kruger Tablets and so one fine day after driving from Tshokwane to Skukuza my party stopped at the Tablets.

"Here we are" I exclaimed proudly, as if making the discovery for the first time!
My friends looked at me rather apprehensively as I boldly stepped out of the Kombi and started clambering around on the rocks heading towards the Tablets. "Come on, get out and join me" I urged them.
One of my friends decided to take the leap of faith and the two of us took some time to explore the area. The others stayed in the vehicle much to my annoyance.

A few vehicles pulled up and stopped, and yet no one got out... I was amused by the fact that no one wanted to get out of their vehicles and decided that they were simply lacking the knowledge that one could get out of the vehicle at this place.
I did mention to my friend that joined me that a sign used to be present informing people that it was safe to alight at their own risk, but that the sign must have been pushed down by an elephant or something.

A lady in a small blue Toyota with much head shaking and tongue clicking even took a photo of me as I was walking back to the Kombi.
I gesticulated to her that she could get out of her car and take some great photos of the Tablets.

Upon returning to the Kombi I confirmed to my sceptical friends that this was indeed a place where one could get out by showing them the "alight" sign on my map.
At this point another friend who had bought her own map as we arrived (I encouraged her not to as I already had one) told me that the "sign" did not seem present on her map.

The big question is... Did I make a BIG WHoopsie?
And is the head shaking, tongue clicking lady going to be posting me in the gallery of shame?

Mlondozie, I always get out at the Kruger tablets. For me it is rather a special place.

Grounding myself in Kruger is a beyond religious experience.

Apparently, and I am not sure on the validity of said statement, they stopped people from getting out because of a pride of lions that had claimed the area around the Tablets as a den sight.

Does anyone know anything about this?

I am pretty sure you are no longer allowed to get out there due to the fact that one is quite a distance away from the vehicle and on many occasions Lions, Ellies and others had been visiting as well and it was felt it was not safe.
I think this is why the sign has been removed.

I do remember a thread about it, must try and see if I can find it.

Elsa...I agree with you...I thought you were no longer allowed to get out there.
I remember seeing something about that but also not sure where.

As far as I know the Lion story is very true that's why people aren't allowed to alight from their vehicles there any longer, I agree with u Bushbuddies if they don't want ppl getting out their anymore then they need to put a sign up so that ppl are aware of it.

I think the general rule is, if there is no sign saying you may alight from your vehicle at your own risk then you don't get out, but I tend to agree especially where this was once a recognised get out spot.

Might be then that I also transgressed...
Had SO even give me a nice pose in front of the tablets and come to think of it, we did not see the sign anymore.
It was June this year and October last year as well.
And to think I was even very proudly flying my yellow ribbon for all to see....

There were signs there a few years ago.

If they have been taken away, then I would definitely say that the get-out privilege has been withdrawn.

Has anyone got recent pics of the signs? (Last month or so)

However it most definitely is not anymore.
The only problem is that my custom google doesn't seem to be able to find any relevant link that works at the moment.
There had been (near) incidents with lions and other dangerous animals and if I can remember correctly the growth of the bush had made sure you had no safe view anymore as well.

All I could find was under the topic of Pictures of animals by the "safe to alight" signs under the Kruger Forum.........there were pictures of various animals at Kruger Tablets and people mentioned you could not get of your vehicle there anymore...............
