Andreas...every opportunity is unique and oftentimes one has to be very flexible with your settings (know your camera!).

I do tend to prefer shooting in Av mode (Aperture Priority), though, and try to keep the shutter speed as high as possible except when attempting to do "panning blur" shots.

Test your camera's image quality at high ISO settings. Being comfortable using high ISO can save shots taken in low light when you need shutter speed.

Hi there

I only have the following in my kit:

CANON SX 30 IS

But I would like to change that :D :cam: :cam:

I was wondering if anybody can give me any advise, ideas on what to look at.

I was looking at a Nikon D90. Any comments???? What do I need? I want it obviously for wild life. At this stage not looking for professional equipment, but it should be able to do much more than my Canon'tjie.

Ultimately then add the SIGMA 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO DG. ????

Does anybody has photos to show me (or can direct me to them if already on this blog) taken with:

The NIKON D90 with the 18-105 lens (according to my understanding comes out with it???)
The NIKON D90 with the Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3

Thanks!!!

Hi Anja,

If you are looking at a Nikon D90 why not buy a Nikon D7000?
Newer version of the D90 more options, more megapixels. :D

I have a D7000 with Nikkor 18-105mm and Nikkor 70-300mm.

I think I'll buy a bigger lens for the next trip maybe the 50-500mm or the 150-500mm 8)

Maybe I can show you pictures at the end of the month taken with this camera and the lenses, when we are back from our Kruger NP trip.

Good luck making your choice.

Greetings,

Gert-Jan

Thank you so much for your advise. Will have a look at the D7000.

Were advised to first get the 70-300 before moving to the 500mm lenses.

Okay - this thread has been quiet for far too long...

I have been planning this for over a year, and finally I have taken the leap...

and converted to the DARK SIDE    :cam:

Here is my new gear lineup which I am taking to Kruger very soon and hopefully to the Kgalagadi sooner rather than later:

Nikon D3s
Nikon D7000 with battery grip
Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR-II
Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8
Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8
SB900 flash
1.4x teleconverter (mark2)
Wimberley off-camera flash bracket

Good choice!

Nikon is very nice I have a Nikon D7000 myself.

Have you tested the 500mm?

Thinking of buying a 500m myself but not this one too expensive for my budget.

Nice kit why the switch?

Enjoy Morkel.
I'm looking forward to seeing the shots.
And welcome to the 'light' side. I'm sure you'll be kicking yourself soon for not having made the switch earlier ;)

Great stuff. I've yet to come across someone who was happy switching from Nikon to Canon, but not vice versa

I read this topic since I recently switched over to DSLR and am in the learning curve. Thus enjoying the upgrading experience. On the one hand I can understand the challenges and satifcation wrt upgrading. But those photos are already so beautiful, capturing the exterior of the objects. .. and then I thought, may be an upgrade will end up in the 'dark side'.... What more can be captured.... the "inside" of the object? :D
