Re: Help w/ info about where to buy provisions near Orpen Ga

Unread postby issi » Thu Apr 28, 2011 3:38 pm

Hi James & Kitja
We fly to Kruger every year and do have the same problem, last year I e-mailed the Pick' n Pay in Malelane with my shopping list.
Their service was excellent and not only did I get the best of what i ordered, but is was ready and packed end kept in cold storage.
It took me 10 min to get my supplies for 7 people for 10 nights!

Staying at Orpen you will probably go through Orpen gate?
Then 30 kms before the gate is Hoedspruit with one of the Best SPAR stores.
We always stock up there and restock if we have to when staying at those Orpen area camps.

If you are coming in at Kruger gate much further south then Hazyview is good as Bert says but you must have good refrigeration in the car as it is 5 hours in lowveld heat to get there.
Malalane stores are good as mentioned above but even further to drive than Hazyview.. Stick with Hoedspruit and you wont have to worry...

Coming from Orpen to Hoedspruit, there is a Spar on the right hand side as you enter Hoedspruit.

If you want to shop in Hoedspruit it is about 30 k's past the Orpen turn-off (coming from the south), but there is a relatively new P&Pay in Hoedspruit. (very nice shop).
As you enter Hoedspruit from the south you will see a Total filling station on the left, immediately after opposite the Total filling station) turn right and right again into a shopping complex, the P & Pay is at the far end.
Also a great Pizza place there, if you've got the munchies, on the left as you enter the complex.

You will have no problem finding what you need in Hazyview.

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

Remember the N4 passes Nelspruit these days, so the best place before Kruger to do last minute shopping is the Pick & Pay or the Spar in Malelane.
25 - 26 January 2014 - Skukuza
27 April 2014 - 3 May 2014 - Berg&Dal + Skukuza (Camping)
9 - 19 July 2014 - Skukuza + Satara (Camping)

Re: Supermarket close to Numbi

Or for a wider choice, but a bit further from Numbi stop at Ilanga Mall as you get to Nelspruit.
You will find a large Pick and Pay, a Game, and more.
And then when you turn on to the R40 to White River and Hazyview you find Spar stores on the left of the road too.
All with free parking.
But you will still find all you actually need in Hazyview!

Hi,

if you want a big shopping mall close to OR Tambo Airport:

Festival Mall Kempton
Corner CR Swart Drive and Kelvin Street
Kempton Park 1619

or

just along the N12:
Lakesidemall in Benoni:
Tom Jones Street, Benoni

Benoni will be our choice on our trip from OR Tambo to KNP.

As you get into Komatipoort from the N4 there is a Spar on the right (first stop street you come to). It has a fairly good selection of goods, and you should be able to get all you need there.

Re: Best/Cheapest shop before Kruger when entering Nelspruit

There's also Riverside Mall in Nelspruit, just off the N4.

Got all the usual shops (P & P, Checkers, Woolworths, Cape Union Mart & a booze shop).

We flew into Nelspruit and it was a 10-15 minute drive to the mall to stock up. We found that Checkers had the most variety and best looking fresh stuff.

As suggested previously, the Riverside Mall is your best option for variety and decent prices.
I have just recently moved to Nelspruit and have been doing my rounds at various shops to see which is better. Checkers in Riverside has everything you could possibly need, including a great wine section & there is a bottle store in the centre as well.

Their meat is very good and they even have BRM ribs - all the way from JHB factory.
The best wood u can get is in the Kruger itself.
Every camp sells it, even the bush camps.

Let me know if you need a cooler box & ice bricks.
I have just started a hire service which could save you the unnecessary cost of buying one for the short period.

Have to also be careful as you no longer go through Nelspruit, the bypass misses it, so if you are not looking for the offramp you will find yourself through there before realising.

BerkiSA,
There is a very good liquor store at Riverside mall, second entrace, used to be called Platsak, now a well-known franchise.
I would shop at Checkers, they also have a large selection of good wines, but you cant beat Woolworths for quality foodstuff.

One Stop Shop for Food and Supplies? J-port to Kruger

Unread postby morgandy » Fri Jan 06, 2012 11:25 pm

Hi folks,

I'm wondering, as the title says, whether there is a large store for food and various supplies (candles, coolers, utensils, etc...) - We don't want to drive too much around Johannesburg when we arrive, and know it is least expensive to stock up before getting into the park.

Any guidance on good places to go (route or town??) that won't have a great deal of traffic
congestion? (we will also be getting used to driving the 'wrong way'!!! :>) , so it is kind of a safety thing too.

Thanks for the help!

Morgandy, another option is to stop along your way from the airport to KNP at Highveld Mall. It is an 'easy one stop shop' off the N4 in Emalahleni in the Mpumalanga region. There is an Outdoor Wearhouse there too where you will find coolers etc etc.
