Most of my mentioned camps are unfenced camps on the Bots side of the park. Very rustic and AFAIK to small for a group of 15.

AFAIK you're only allowed with eight persons and two cars per campsite. Some campsites are far away from each other.

Hi G@mespotter!
1) Wilderness camps are for 'Residents Only' - you will see 'No Entry' and 'Residents Only' signs at the turn-offs to the camps. If you really feel the need to check out the camps before you book them, there is a lot of info on these camps on the forum already(under Arid Parks and in the Travellers Tales section). Alternatively, speak to the Tourism Manager and ask permission to enter these camps, if you really have to see before trying. OR... you can opt for being pleasantly surprised when you actually stay there.

2) your itinerary! !! This is your first visit and you will get a good 'feel' of the whole park! You could include 1 or 2 nights at KTC - this wilderness camp is bigger than the rest(not limited to 8 people), but still is unfenced with lots of great sightings!

To end off - anywhere you stay in KTP is great so Enjoy!

wanderw is correct.

Kalahari Tented Camp has enough units for you.

Hello from Phuket-

We are travelling to TFP from Pretoria with a 4WD/tent etc, from 24 August to 1 September 2010. This will be our first visit to TFP, and coming from so far (Thailand) we would be most appreciative of advice from experienced members - Thank you in advance

1. The best camping sites (we do not wish to stay in cottages)
2. How many nights to spend in each Camp
3. Suggestions for best waterholes/game viewing areas etc.
4. Any tracks which we can explore ?
5. If the camp is full can we share a site with another camper ? (we are two, car & tent)

We look forward to hearing from friendly folk soon - thanks.
Pixie & Nigel

Hello from The Hague!

Going from memory here, so it may be that some people will point out a few mistakes in this post.

The camps with camping do not have deliniated sites, nor can you reserve a spot. First come, first served is the trick.
Mind you, not all camps have camping spots! In fact, only Twee Rivieren and Mata Mata have camping facilities. As you'll be there for a week that should not really be a problem though, but limits your choice.

I would seriously consider a tent in for instance Urikaruus, it's not expensive and you have way more choice.

Best camping sites in my experience from KTP: Nossob and Mata-Mata. At Mata-Mata, try get spots number 20, 19 or 17

For me it is Nossob.

They have 'moved' the MM waterhole downstream from the camping area to in front of the expensive chalets.

MM camping area floods if there is rain.

The Nossob hide is often very productive - watch the webcam. The camping area is large.

As for predators & raptors, it is right place at tight time - but for both camps it can be quite often!

Mata Mata would be my bet...
All the waterholes to Urikaruus are good for lions and other cats. Raptors you'll see all over the place.

@ wademckenzie,

Warm welcome to the forum, hope you will have a great time here.

Regarding your request for the best camp in the park, my answer will be according to predator movements and sightings recorded.
Currently the best camp/s for the predators would be Twee Rivieren and Mata-Mata, aslo have a look at the thread "Recent animal sightings' and it would give you an idea of what and where. All the waterholes hold something special.

I would opt for Mata-Mata as well. We have had good lion sightings at Nossob, but during our stay at Mata-Mata last year we saw lion every day as well as cheetah almost every day. We saw most raptors in the Nossob area, but they are all over the park.

As KG said, animals move around so there is no certain answer tho your question though... :hmz:

My favourite was the area between Dalkeith and Dertiende borehole during our previous visit - see my trip report (address in my signature). We stayed at Kieliekrankie, Nossob, Bitterpan and KTC during that 12 days (end of May/begining of June 2011) and we saw lots of action in that area. But like the others are saying - it depends on the movement of the animals and being in the right place at the right time.

And about two weeks before I go to the park, I follow Jannie's recent animal sightings very carefully. As well as other theads like trip repots (that was how I came to know about the hyenas' dens).

Thanks, Jannie for all your trouble with the sightings.

Till now I have never been to Nossob. therefor I can´t say anything about the sightinings over there. But Even in Kalahari tented Camp and Mata Mata we had great sightings of Predators. E.g Bat eared Fox, Jackals, Hayena, Lions AWC. My Favorite waterhole ist sitzas. the last time I have been there we saw Lions, Jackals... . To say which camp is the best will be very difficult, to have good spottings have always to do with luck meaning to be on the right place on the right side.

One thing shouldn´t be forgotten, as far as I know, if you go to Nossob you will need a 4X4 to Mata Mata not. That is an Aspeckt you should keep in mind.

Best regards
