Hi guys

Well we have just returned from an amazing holiday in the KNP. We saw so many amazing things.... Some which I have never seen and will share with you......

We stayed for the longest period at Satara. We had a ball although the camping grounds need some seeing to. But must make mention of a poor Girrafe we spotted around Shingwedzi Camp. He had the most aweful skin disease. I have never seen anything like it. It looked like the whole giraffe was covered in a form of Scoriacis(spelling??) he had no mane left and this disease seemed to make his whole body one giant scab. It bothered him because he kept scratching himself on the thorn bushes. In addition to this the oxpeckers had broken the scab in various areas revealing oozing open wounds which seemed to pain him each time the little birdies had a chew at them. We did tell one of the Game Capture representitives around Satara but are not sure what happened. Can we find out somehow.

My next exciting find was a breeding pair of white headed vultures!!!! I have never laid eyes on these particular vultures and I have been going to the park since before I can remember. It was such a pleasure to see them so healthy at a nest site. Whether they are being succesfull at raising a chick is unknown but I wish them luck anyways.

Quick question...has anyone ever seen an Osprey in the partk?? I have to review the photogreaphs but I am almost sure we saw one at a small dam along the way from Satara to Skakuza. If so...WOW...what a find!!!!!!!

We also had the pleasure of seeing a very preggie wild dog den hunting with her mate. She was so pregnant you could see the bulges of individual puppis in her belly...and on closer inspection..THEY MOVED!!!!! We enjoyed thatr immensly and stayed with them for almost three hours before we had to make our way back before the gate closed.

Well there was quite a lot more unusual things we saw but it would take me three pages to describe it all so I will leave you with these memorable 3 for now.

And Guess What...Kgalagadi in December for the first time ever!!!!!!!

Hi guys.

Thanks for the warm welcome back.

We spotted the wild dogs on the tar road between Orpen and Satara. To be quite axact it was mainly around the turn off to the bobbejaankrans lookoutpoint. We have some awsome pics of them.

Our spotting of the whiteheaded vultures was on the S127 sand road on the way to Timbivati picnic spot. They were sitting at a typical nest high in a big fever tree. Weather they were nesting or not I dont know but my books said you generally find them in pairs. It was most positively white headed because of the fluff on the head and the distinct orange beaks. When I read in the book how rarely they were seen I was so chuffed. Also I had never laid eyes on one of them.

I'm still scanning the photo to determine if it was an Osprey that we saw. Sevral nature people have confirmed they also think its an osprey but I'm waiting for my mother to get back from holi's. She has seen on two occasions and will be able to say yes or no...Will keep posted.

I just remembered...we also saw a strange insect...It looked like a giant earwig and had the smallest of wings, but the really gross part was that it almost looked to have short arms with things that closely resembled a pair of hands!!!!! I scanned our limited insect book and could not find anything that even closely resembled this thing. Anyone encountered such a strange insect??

Cheers and speak later
