:( My family and I went thru for a day visit into the Kruger yesterday and I couldn't believe that coming in at Orpen and going out at Phalaborwa gate that I could see so little Game, Never in my life have I not seen the Big 5 around Satara, Nor did it ever take almost the whole day just to see an elephant, Where have all the animals gone????????

S-L, you chose a real bad day. We had a huge storm that came through Phala at 04h00 yesterday morning, this heavy rain forced the animals into hiding.

lol Flutterby I hope that they atleast voted for the correct party if that was the case

Ai cheetah and Sprocky its been 5 months since I was last their, I was so excited to go yesterday and then almost no animals, ok so we saw elephant, impala, zebra's, wildebeest and giraffe, the only bonus we hit was a Huge herd of Buffalo that we found just outside of Letaba but other than that Nothing it was truly scary................................

What storm did you guys have their? Im from Tzaneen and we only had a few drops of rain here and I didn't really see any water puddles Letaba and Olifants side?

This is sad hey :( I'm just assuming the storm is the reason for the bad luck. I don't stay in palaborwa. in the last while there have been many sightings of cheetah and wild dogs near Orpen. and I had many sightings of lions near satara. and general game was high!

The Letaba - Palaborwa gate area is usually quiet in my experience. Quess its down to luck. But more animals in the grasslands than Mopani areas. And easier to see also.

Hiya Cheetah

I honestly hope the same as you that it was only a stroke of very bad luck, but it is odd, in December I saw a pride of 6 Lion, a cheetah with 3 cubs and missed the wild dog by seconds who dissappeard into the bush just before we got their that was on the Open road, that was 5 months ago however I have never known that road or any of the roads around Satara to not have animals it was truly unbelievable to witness because I agree with you Letaba- phalaborwa area is quite on wildlife and you have to look that much harder to find them but Satara/Orpen? That is a 1st for me to witness in all the Years ive been going to the Kruger :?

It is all about right place right time, isnt´it? :hmz:

We stayed at Satara for two nights in April, we drove the S100 three times and we went on a the sunset drive but we didn´t see any predators.
A week later on the way back we stopped at Satara for breakfast and we couldn´t believe what was written on the ranger´s sightings board: on the sunset drive the night before they saw lions, leopard, african wild cat and even a serval!!

But......if you keep your expecations low you won´t be disappointed.

Andreas the reason you didn't see much was because you were on the s100 :rtm:
Honestly speaking it is the worst road around satara. In march/april my lion sightings:
H1-4 = 3 times. 2 different prides
H7 = 2 times. males once, females other time.
s36. 2 males hunting buffalo
s90 2 males in the road
H6 6 males fighting another younger male.
s39 = 2 males west of timbavati. pride of a male and 3 females near roodewal.

in November.
Lions
H7
s41
H1-3

and leopard on H1-3

In terms of general game, the big cluster of grazers is usually due south or south west of satara. We saw the same giraff, impala, buffalo, wilderbeest and zebra hanging out together every day.

 Andreas I do agree with the statement bout the right place and the right time, but "sigh" lol 5 months I had been craving the mere thought of visiting my home away from home again and then only to see nothing, I know my expectations were high and you'd think that I learnt from my mistakes after all Ive been going to the Kruger since I was a baby but eish I guess Im like a romantic at heart and Ill always stand firm on the chivalry  lol

My next trip is over my birthday in August and then Ill be staying over for 3 days, hopfully I see my beautiful majestical cats then

the s100 used to be good. but lots of traffic over the years has turned it into a dust bowl. The dust has smothered the plant life and now the general sightings there include the odd waterbuck along the Nwanetsi, and the usual impala. the other grazers have moved towards the H6 where the grass is short and green after the burn. the lions and leopards have followed them. Not a single cat pinned up on s100 for 6 days I was there. but everyday pinned up on the H6

If you don't see the big 5 look for the little 5. Or do some birding.
The birding actually helps you see way more, you stop to see what that bird is..... A honeyguide. ID made you almost start to leave when you notice it's behaviour, and out comes the honeybadger!

Hasn't happened to me yet, but it is possible... ;)

Indeed Duques

satara is great for smaller rarities and raptors too!! Genet and African Wild Cat are commonly seen on the night drives there. Hunny Badger in the camp. and those dead tree stumps often have a Marshall Eagles or Bataleur perched on them

Many head to kruger to hunt big 5, but each area has something special to offer. Where you going for your bday weekend?
