Whaoooo ! Some real big kudu on this thread.

Rookie and o-dog, really big - measured along the ridge these kudu must measure a good 60" - that is big.

Naomi C - that kudu is even bigger - at least 65" I estimate.

Now, Hippo fan - that kudu of yours must measure over 70" !
It certainly is the biggest I have ever seen in the "flesh".

The Rowland Ward world record is some 74" - from the Eastern Transvaal [ Mpumalanga ] region and this kudu of yours must be close to that, especially with those wonderfully thick horns and the deep curl.

The "One with nature" and "Harrys" kudu most likely will also measure in excess of 60" and with the exceptional wide spread they could approach CSI No 1 [ Safari Club international ], their measurement is not purely length, but a combination of length, base dia. and "tip-to-tip" spread.

So far Hippofan wins hands down.

I now want to repeat what I have called for in the Buffalo Thread - please some-one out there, finance the building of a general game museum [ maybe at Satara ] where exceptional general game can be exhibited. It will be a wonderful tribute to Nature if we can walk into such a museum and see how big the general game had become in KNP.

The Hippo Fan kudu is in its end time - you can see its condition is going downhill and he must have lived many years to grow those huge horns. If he is still alive, then he surely must have 2 years max left in life and won't it be a screaming shame that those horns are to be chewed up by hyena rather than being preserved for generations to come ?

100Ponder, thanks for sharing your expertise and wisdom with us!

Please enlighten me how you "estimate" a kudu's horn length based on pics alone?

Hi OWN,

When trophy hunting you can only look at the animal and make a judgment by what you see, similar to looking at a photo. Only, by looking at a photo you have unlimited time to make an estimate.

Having measured scores of kudu horns in trophy competitions has also helped a lot, skull mounts as well as head mounts gave me a fairly good insight into what I see.

A guide normally is to assume the ear's length to be 12" from the top side on the head to ear tip.
This of course will very from one animal to the next but will serve as a suitable guide for a trophy hunter – weather he uses rifle or camera.

What is some-what deceptive on a photo is that it is 2-dimentional and the observer loose some of the value of a “deep” curl in a horn. Seeing the animal “in the flesh” give a better picture of how long the horn really is.

The kudu you and “Harrys” photographed has mush shallower curls and are therefore “straighter” than the Hippofan kudu, this reduces the length along the ridge although the distance from skull to horn tip is substantial.

By the way, I am referring to measuring according to the Rowland Ward system, that is a measurement along the ridge of the horn which starts at the base of the horn on the front side and runs approx on the outside of the CURL of the horn and then petering out towards the tip of the horn from where the measurement continues in a straight as possible line to the horn tip.

For actual measurement the measurer use a “measuring cable” which is relatively stiff. Such a cable has the advantage that it can be bent in any direction to follow the horn’s curl, something impossible with a steel measuring tape. The length of the horn is then marked on the cable and measured by steel measuring tape.
[ Fabric measuring tapes are never used as they are less accurately calibrated and can be stretched.]

Another thing, the number of curls is less important as on straighter horns [shallow curls] you may have three curls but such a horn can measure shorter along the ridge than a two and a half curler with exceptionally deep curls.

What do I prefer ? Difficult to make up my mind as I just love the OWN kudu where the curls just continue up and up with the very wide horn tip spread.

Here is a magnificent kudu from a recent trip.
What drew my attention was his commanding, regal pose, but more especially his distinctive hair on the neck and upper chest.
Not sure what that is called, but mighty impressive, I thought.

Hi OWN,

The throat mane on your kudu is very good but most of the neck/hump mane has been lost due to age - similar to some of us humans going bald.

Always be sensitive early morning and late afternoon when meeting with Kudu and Nyala, they make WONDERFUL photos when you take the photo against the sun which will then be shining through their manes.

The Kudu Bull is my favorite antelope.

This is a young bull taken 600 metres from Balule gate at about closing time (Titus I am coming just let me take this pic in golden light:D ) He has another half curl in the horns to when the points point inwards and then ina few years the horns will have lovely ivory colored tips

Thanks onewithnature. The whole group of them (about 30 or so mix of males , females and young were browsing the area, but paying particular attention to the flowers and their stems. I have never seen the flower before in any area apart from on the left hand side of the s122 Muntshe Loop, just before it hits the H10 Lower Sabie to Tshokwane Road. Hope that helps pin it down a little.
