A yellow billed kite was seen + - 10 km south of my sighting at Tongaat, at Mount Edgecombe, also on Sat 31 July.

My Little Eyes Spied: One YBK being harrassed by Drongos in Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti - today... Marked it in my dog-eared and tattered (but beloved) Roberts' Birds of Southern Africa!!!

Saw a yellow billed kite drifting along Pierneef Rd in Villieria (Pretoria) at about 5 minutes past 6 this morning.

Interestingly, the only other time I've seen a YBK in Pretoria was in late February last year, also very early in the morning, over Duncan Rd in Hatfield.

The two sightings are about 5 kms apart.

Only just found this thread.

We have been in Port Edward since October, and regularly have YBKs flying over our garden.
Saw one yesterday

However, I have yet to see one land to get a better view

Here's hoping

I have it on good authority that these raptors seen in KTP in Jan are in fact Juvenile Yellow-billed Kites, a first of a juv. for us.

Are there any KITES still around?
I don't think I've seen one for at least 2 weeks in Durban North!
Have they left your area as well?

I spotted the last one for the season here in Amanzimtoti early in March this year. Their departure was definitely earlier than usual this time around! (Perhaps that indicates a colder than usual winter approaching??)

Something for the Afrikaans speaking folks. We were travelling down the Eastern Cape coast when my friend spotted a bird. He asked me what it was and I replied " 'n Geelbek Wou" He replied by saying it must be a male because if it was a female, it would have been a " Geelbek Wou Nie"

Pretty sure the raptor I got a glance at yesterday over Pinelands was a ybk!

Okay,

Just seen the topic and I feel I must share this with you. I work in Ethiopia (Makelle). Here is a HUGE concentration of YBK around I will try and put some pics on. At any stage of the day when I stand on the roof of the office I can count 5 to 10 of the flying around. At sunset they tend to get together and at a stage I counted 30 of them together flying in a circle. What do they eat except for a mouse or 2 ? :hmz:

I know this is not SANP related but it puzzles me that there is such a lot of them here together and down south not as much

:hmz:
