Hah, hah.. hah growing older does not mean bigger,
as a matter of fact, anything larger than life seems to
shrink that much faster.

Baboon

on a recent trip to a national park whose name I can't disclose a guide told me that baboons always sleep on the same trees...is that correct? I tried a web search but didn't come up with any resuts. Personally, I find it hard to believe

btw: is this the first baboon thread in the mammals section? The search function came up empty...

Baboons do have well defined home ranges with suitable foraging areas as well as trees and vegetation that provide protection and safe areas where they can sleep at night. Some areas of their home range are frequented more often than other areas so some trees may be occupied more frequently than others, depending on the time of year and hence food and water availability.

The saying goes a picture paints a thousand words. But this is not always the case. That is why there is a story to tell on certain photos.
For instance in this photo there is a humourous story to tell to complete the picture. When I arrived at the scene the young baboon was sitting with its mother. Like all youngsters he was getting bored and decided to go play with a couple of other youngsters who were bigger than him. The playing got a bit rough and mother stopped grooming the Alpha male and fetched her youngster. Junior was back under mother's control and resumed grooming the big male. Junior got bored again and went back to the youngsters who roughed him up again. Mother fetches him and resumes grooming the big guy. Of course this does not last long and junior disappears again to be roughed up for the third time. The male is now the hell in for all the interruptions to his grooming, gets up and with one bark grabs junior and returns to the female for her to continue the grooming. Problem solved! Junior is now under control of Big Daddy and does not move off again!!!!

It was very cold the morning in July when we saw these baboons. They did not move and there were several of them in the trees.

Did you know? :hmz:
Baboons sleep on average for 10 hours during the night. They will sleep in an upright position and will very seldom lie down and sleep. They have great balance and will very seldom fall out of the tree. They will use the same place to sleep if they are in the same vicinity. Different troops will also make use of the same sleeping place, as the one moved on.

This may describe you pretty well, RP, but I have to wonder if you have "great balance". 8)

I just loved this pose and maybe the youngster had also been taken "in hand" but we unfortunately didn't see the lead up to the scene.
