Canon 1.4 111 TC advice needed

Unread postby Shirleymargate » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:00 pm

Hi We Pienaar family from Margate in South Africa, have been in New Zealand from November last year and we are staying untill the end of August. We have already booked a trip to Kruger for October.
Because of the abundance of birdlife here i find that I need to get closer to the birds - I have a Canon 40D and use a 100-400L zoom lens. I have thought of getting a 1.4x 111 TC but do not know whether it is best to get the 11 or 111 series. Hope you understand because I was told that the 11 series has been replaced with the 111 series ? Any advice please?
Shirl

Hi Shirl, Unless I missed something there is only the I or II (mark one, or mark two).

But!
A 40D with a 100-400 will not happily mate with a 1.4 TC. Well, they will, but will not autofocus.
The 100-400 is f/5.6 at it's longest end, and the 40D has f/5.6 as it's last stop for AF. If you add the TC you add a stop, going to f/8, and AF will not be available anymore.
Not handy with photographing birds.

That said, I have a 20D and 7D with a 100-400, both with that same problem, yet get good photos of birds. Just keep the center focus point (the fastest) on them, not bothering with composition.
That will come at home.

So in short? Don't buy the TC.

Hi DuQues

Thank you for your reply/advice. The mark 111 is available in NZ.
I have decided to take the advice of an expert and not to buy the TC but to rather rob the bank in the future and get a secondhand longer focal length lens.

Once again - Thank you

Rob the bank.... He says it out loud! We had better remove this post before NZ Police ask for it as proof!

Hang on a bit with that robbery. The 100-400 will do you fine, especially with a camera like the 7D behind it. That gives Canon the time to build the lens we probably both want.
They are working on a 200-400 with a 1.4 TC build in! So with the flick of a finger you can go from wildlife to birding! And I would be extremely surprised if you won't get AF with the TC activated.
You will have to save up though, I'm expecting that lens to be at least 3000 USD.... :(

Hi I am putting my criminal plans on hold and start saving for the new Canon lens with the built in TC.
We are booked to go to the South Island on the 13th of this month ,Milford Sound area, and I have added a Sigma 10 - 20 F4-5.6 Ex DC lens to my equipment. Took some pictures in Hamilton during the hot air balloon festival and in Hamilton gardens - excellent.

Kind regards
Frans and Shirl.

I am afraid the 200-400 f:4 with TC incorporeted will be rather around 7000usd -8000usd
All the new canon lenses sorting out at the moment are a lot more expensive than the Nikon's ones :(

my father has the 100-400 L and it takes amazing shots of most (without the 1.4 X) personally, I would rather save some cash and either buy a 300 f4 and a 1.4X tele converter (what I am getting tomorrow as it is my b-day:) ) or the 400m f5.6.. for most, the 300 with 1.4x combo is very very good and you will not be able to notice a loss of image quality. if you are worried bout image quality then lookat going for a 400 f5.6or even 400 2.8 with 1,4X ) as it is very well known for very fast focus and image quality is spectacular.

both lenses mentioned above are light weight and very good price vs. performance.

If you looking to get the 1.4x than you need a pretty fast lens for it. For travelling to south africa the long lenses could be a hassle (500,600mm) I would say get yourself a 300 F2.8 and then you can stick a 2x and get a 600mm f5.6 IS lens on it. And when you go on night drives you have a 300 f2.8.

Hope it helps
