The same book states on page 19 under number of mammals in KRUGER:-
and I quote...

"Brown Hyaena (Hyaena Brunnea). . . . .. . . . 100 - 200"

So according to PE Fourie - surely by some sort of censu - between 100 and 200 Brown Hyaena in 1980?

To tell the exact distribution is very difficult. esspecially Brown Hayenas will be diffucult to spot because (exception exist of Course e.g. in Namibia) life secretly. Best examples in Augrabies they belive that Brown Hayenas roam around. they found signs (checkt out Arid Parks--> Augrabies Nightdrives and then the talk between me and Augrabie Guru). He statted that the might come back. I belive it is the same with the hayenas. Because the distribution will scratch the Border iof Kruger. In Botsuana and Zimbabwe there occur Brown Hayenas. Because of the Civil war I belive they might join the kruger crew because of safte reasons. Best examples were the animals from Mocambique.

To summerize i belive there will be always a chance.

Must agree, though, the books and censuses of those days included mostly guesstimates of predator numbers...they would mostly also have said 1500 lion in Kruger...totally wrong!
Not really. The 2005-2006 lion call+up census estimated 1,600 lions, give or take 225. So 1,500 would have been a pretty good guess.

Thank you, Johan!

Would the 1500 then also have been correct in the period under discussion? (70's-80's)

I have a book by David Steele , titled " Game Sanctuaries of Southern Africa " , published 1972 . In the chapter for Kruger National Park , he states : " There are a number of different carnivorous animals . Kruger Park is well known for its lion , but leopard , brown and spotted hyena , black-backed and side-striped jackals , wild dogs , civet , genet , caracal , serval and African wild cat may all be seen "

Unfortunately , no pics . :x

Stephan (Reporter) went to the ranger at Skukuza and confirmed with him the Brown Hyena sighting. So it is the first confirmed sighting of them in a long time.
