Abdim’s Stork

Scientific Name: Ciconia abdimii
Afrikaans name: Kleinswartooievaar

Size: 76 cm – the smallest of the Storks found in southern Africa.

Identification: Pied (irridescent dark-brown and white), similar to Black Stork, but smaller and short-legged. Bill tawny, face blue with red eye-patch, legs light-pink with red knees and feet. In flight difficult to distinguish from Black Stork, but usually occurs in flock up to hundreds, compared to Black Stork mostly being solitary. Juvenile similar to adult, but with light-brown neck and head.

Distribution: Common non-breeding summer visitor, found in northern South Africa, occuring in grasslands, agricultural lands and bushveld. Commonly found in freshly toiled land.

Yolandé posted a sighting of 38 of these beauties round about the 20th January 2009, west of Hartebeespoort Dam on the R560. She even added coordinates! 25°48"51'S, 27°45"04'E. I went out there a few days later to find them at the EXACT same spot!

Today was in the area, so decided to see if they were still there, and lo and behold they’ve now grown in numbers to over 100! So if you want to see them, get out there to what seems to be a “guaranteed” sighting.

Noticed this bird has not been indexed yet, so added it now. Thanks Yolandé for this beautiful sighting!!! JvR, please add to the index?
