Seen at Northern Farm today.

The Green Sandpiper that I have seen on the 4th January 2009 at Northern Farm, is still there. I have seen them again today, at the very same spot.

Here is some directions to where they are:
As you go through the tunnel underneath the N14,( just beneath the parking area), turn left.
Drive straight on. There are houses on the left of this road, and as you reach the first house, there is a road turning to your right. Take that road.
It makes a right turn. Then pass a area where they are still working, there is a tractor parked there.
Pass that area. Then you reach the place where the road goes over the water canal.
I have now seen them twice on the left side, in the canal.
There is also a smallish road right next to the canal

The first time I saw only the one. Today I saw another one with him, a bit smaller - maybe the female??

Here is another photo of the Greeny.

The back is dark, and the spots are bearly visible. Longish bill. Eye stripe doesn't extend behind the eye. And broad tail bars are slightly visible.
Chest,Neck also streaked a lot.



JenB - the one we saw today is not the Green SAndpiper - it is yet another Wood sandpiper. As were the 3 around the corner were the bulldozer is parked.

I came back from a fantastic 10 days in Kruger. Got 5 species that I saw that aren't clear to me... Wondering if anyone can confirm my sucpicions?



I believe that this guy is a Green Sandpiper. (Seen in olifants river near balule on the 12th September.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would expect it to be a Wood Sandpiper, as most suspected Green Sandpipers are. GS is rare and only arrives in SA in September in small numbers. BUT! The lack of a spotty back and the fact that the white eye-stripe does not extent behind the eye makes me think this could indeed be a Green Sandpiper. Ferdelance, if an expert (not me) confirms this it might be worth submitting this photo to Trevor Hardaker as the first SA Green Sandpiper of the season. Then again, I might be wrong.

Wader migration is coming to an end up here in Northern Europe , but for the last couple of month I've been seeing lots of wood and green sandpipers. To me there is absolutely no doubt what so ever that the bird on this photo is a green sandpiper. The two species are actually not that difficult to separate , I think - green sandpiper has more in common with common sandpiper , while wood sandpiper is more similar to the tringa-sandpipers.

Limpopo has produced the first GREEN SANDPIPER of the season with a bird being recorded along the Olifants River near Balule.

Well spotted, and ID! You should start a "Rare Bird" threat. Seems we're going to have an interesting summer!

Just goes to show, you don't have to be an expert

Just thought I'd let you guys know that I recorded a Green Sandpiper at Nsemani Dam west of Satara 2 days ago amongst a whole load of Wood Sandpipers, so if anyone's heading that way keep an eye open. Also recorded Grey-hooded Kingfisher about 1km into the park from Phabeni gate today and an adult Booted Eagle from the Sabie High level bridge. Although not in kruger a Cuckoo Hawk also decided to give my car a close shave on the road between Hazyview and White river later the afternoon.
