Hi Mwt,

No.3 - Yellow-billed Kite - Shape and posture in flight - I'm taking a guess with this one based on the tail shape and the way this bird is holding it's head.

Hope this helps.

Just seen PL's post as I hit the submit button. I think you have them all now between us :D

What's the worst that can happen OWN? You can get an ID wrong but at least you tried and then if someone corrects you go and see why they said so. This way you will learn so much faster and it will stick much easier if you put a bit of work into it!

Yellow-billed Kite clearly identifiable by the all yellow bill and that quite distinct tail!

On my recent vist to KNP Ipaid particular attention to raptors as they are new to me. I have been able to identify most but these two have me beat. Both were taken near Skukuza in late December.

The first I am guessing is a Black Kite, given the blacl bill and very long tail with legs bare to the knee. The size is fairly large.

I was lucky enough to see my first African Hawk-Eagle and also a Long-crested Eagle at Lower Sabie.

Thanks in advance
Pete

I'm really struggling to identify these birds I saw near Skukuza last week. Didn't see them fly - a truck rushed between us and they were gone. I find brown raptors REALLY REALLY difficult!

These are really confusing me  - I dismissed all true eagles because of the bare legs from the Tarsus to the foot. But I can't seem to pinpoint them to anything other than eagles. ..... anyone else got any ideas?

Dave

Hi Granjan, your birds look like immature Yellow billed Kites.
Regards

Niall.

Thanks Niall!
Another lesson learnt. Always read the description of the juvenile. I'd dismissed ybk because of the black bill.
