Thanks Dave and wingman, I expect that juvenile steppe buzzard is most likely what it is. However, are there any "experts" who might have something further to add?

At first I'd thought that this bird was a juvenile steppe buzard or even a juvenule jackal buzzard, but now I'm wondering if it might in fact be a forest buzzard? Seen along the road between Darling and Yzerfontein on 25 March 2010. :hmz:

Hmmm...
Adult or sub-adult Steppe Buzzard. I cannot see a pale eye. Habitat very unlikely for the time of year to eb a Forest Buzzard. Not a Jackal Buzzard juvenile as the photo doesn't show uniform rufous on the chest, but broken dark brown barring and straeking.

 BoPs are always a challenge. This one is a dark-form Steppe Buzzard.

Saw this one in Golden Gate on a rainy January afternoon overlooking a stream. Would appreciate your opinion - ?Common Buzzard or Forrest Buzzard? :hmz:

Hi BB, it looks like a Steppe (aka Common - formerly lumped) Buzzard to me.

Cheers

Niall.

I would have to go with juvenile Steppe Buzzard. It could be an adult Forest, but I see light coloured eyes of the juvenile Steppe including the streaking on breast of a juv.

I took the following picture of this medium sized raptor. I am trying to identify this bird and think it might be the "Steppe Buzzard" also known as the "BruinJakkalsVoel".

Answers to the questions asked in identifying a bird.
1.) Where did you see this animal? (National Park, area of the country.)
Kruger National Park close to Afsaal Picnic spot. (2011-03-06)

2.) In what habitat was it? (Rocks, tree, mountainous, grasland, etc.)
The bird was sitting in a tree on the H3 between Afsaal & Berg-en-Dal.

3.) What size was it approx.?
Medium Size (Little bigger than a Guineafowl)

4.) Was it alone?
Yes

5.) What was it doing?
Starring ( :D Could not help myself)

6.) What time of year / season was it?
Summer
