Which spacecraft is now furthest from the Earth, and what primary mission did it accomplish?

I seem to thing that it'll be either one of the Viking or Pioneer (?) ones, the one that had to go and give us real good info on Saturn's rings, but I'll have to look further.

I'll go with the Voyager 1 it's main mission was to take pictures of the planets Jupiter & Saturn. It was launched in 1977 and completed the main mission in 1980. It is still in use today and is relaying all different kinds of info about the Kuiper Belt etc. back to earth.

Let's get this one going again!

At which time of the year should you not try and find South by means of the Southern cross?

When you're on your Summer holidays in the Northern Hemisphere?

Something to do with an equinox or the alignment of planets?
Back from beautiful Botswana - a long time to wait, but KNP and KTP planned for 2016!

It depends where you are, IB, but at more southerly latitudes the Cross dips below the horizon for a few months.

Obviously! I looked more carefully and just now saw those invisible words, KNP.

I'd say that, in September and October, the Cross dips below the horizon (or the tree line) for most of the night, making it difficult to use to find south. However, there are times when it does appear during this time, although that would be in the early mornings before sunrise.

Almost exactly six years ago, Pluto was reclassified from the status of a planet - which distinction it held for the same number of years as the orbit of Halley's Comet - to a dwarf planet of our Solar System. Why was Pluto eventually reclassified in this way?
