Totally correct, and part of the answer, which you could not know:

This is the photo that I posted 6 years ago on these forums. I never knew what that action would result in...

And I love it!

(Just had to repost the pic!)

Hi All

I haven’t posted photos for a long time so I do hope I’ve got it right!!

After looking through this thread I’ve had a small crisis of confidence on some of my Kruger bird IDs.

I’m fine with all the UK raptors, though even here the juveniles of the more exotic ones can be a bit tricky.

The SA raptors are just in another league!

Please click on the photos for bigger size.

Is this a juv. Dark Chanting Gos.? Saw lots all over Kruger.

My old SASOL B of SA and I are not quite 100% up to this challenge I think!

Well UKB it seems you are upto the challenge. Your ID is spot on. This one is a juv Dark Chanting Goshawk. Well Done.

Hi guys, I'm back from KNP and am preparing my trip report. I would like to ask some help identifying some raptors we saw or confirming my ID's. All were seen around the Pretoriuskop/Phabeni area in the past four days.

I didn't get a picture of the front, but it was light and barred. I think there might be too little detail to ID it, unless I'm missing obvious and somebody else knows what it could be?

Thank you so much for your help! :gflower:

1. Not too sure, but it looks like a youngish Dark Chanting Goshawk.

1. I think could either be a Dark-chanting Goshawk or Gabar Goshawk but I'll rather go with the former.

Can someone help with the ID of this Juvenile Goshawk? Is it a pale chanting gowhawk or a Gabar goshawk?

We saw it on the S114 in Kruger in February this year - Indeed a beautiful raptor!

Thanks in advance :gflower:

Please help in confirming the identification of this raptor.

Date Taken: 2012-06-01
Where: Southern Kruger National Park
Size: Guinea Fowl +- 53 cm

The raptor was sitting on a branch overlooking the savanna field.

This looks like a Dark Chanting Goshawk (Donkersingvalk) to me but I am not sure. There were some others that look similar, but did not make the cut...

  • Lizzard Buzzard - To big to be a LB.
  • Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk - Wrong area....
