Male Lion - "Ou vuilbaard" (ol' dirty beard)
Warthog - "Vlak vlakkie" (my son could not say "varkie" when little) (vark = pig)
Warthog - "Ferrari"
Blue Wildebeest - "Blou-wille-boepens-bees" (wild blue big-bellied beast)

When my daughters (now in their 20's) were little they used these names:

Bacon strips

For some strange reason we call Hadeda's - Lah Di Dahs

Whenever we see them they are running around like crazy,

yellow-billed hornbill - flying banana
red-billed hornbill - flying chilli pepper
impala (and most other wee antelope) - deer (my family are frequent knp visitors, we all know how bad this is....but it's a habit!)

Pale Chanting Goshawk - an enchanted one
Marabou Stork - Malibu Stork
Southern Carmine Bee-eater - Calamine Bee-eater
Impala - Spicy Biltong
Wildebeest - Wild Beasts
Giraffe - G. Raft

Baboons - In-Law's

Impalas -impalalalas

We call the hornbills Tittle-Tattles. In the quiet of the early morning they look just if they are spreading idle gossip and mischief across the veld.

When i was younger my friends, my sisters and I called the hyhenas - the hehe haha's

Just caught up with this thread now. My family and friends are quite shocked when I manage to reverse the first letters of two worded animals name or if only a single name I reverse a middle letter.

Here goes:

Fork tailed Drongo - Dork failed Trongo
impala - pimala
warthog - hortwog
waterbuck - baughterwuck
leopard - peolard
cheetah - teechah
elephant - pheleant also "ponderous pachyderm"
lion - niol
buffalo - fubbalo
crocodile - drococile
pin tailed wydah - tin wailed pydah
kudu - duku
grey loerie - lay groerie
ground hornbill - hound gornbill
hippopotamus - pippohotamus.

Its good fun when going through the park and you try think up names like this.

Here is another good thread

My cousin saw her first zebra as a child and said it looked like a donkey wearing pajamas. That became Pajama Donkeys. The expression stuck ever since. I see there are other variations of this one used by others as well.
We started calling bats "muisvlerre" after the children's series "Liewe Heksie". I still do.
