The night sounds of the bush are amazing and i can sit for hours just listening and taking it all in. There is nothing that is more special than sitting and listening to the sounds of the bush around the fire at night. some of my favourites are the scops owl, fiery-necked nightjar, hyena, jackal , lion, crickets and frogs. Definately one of the things i miss most about not being in kruger

On my first visit, in Lower Sabie I heard what I though was very loud snoring coming from the adjacent bunglow. SO had a real laugh when I told him and he had to explain it was the hippos.

Woken up one night in Tamboti by the roar of mating lions across the river. Very scary but what a sound.

And I love sitting outside the rondavel, just listening to the crackle of all the braais and the low mumour of other guests discussing the day's sightings. It's so relaxing.

Animal sounds at night! That is what the bush is about. Even if you do not see a single great sighting in the day it is Kruger by night that call you back every time. We love the Lions near Talamati. They like to make themselves heard. Also the camp being so rural really adds to the vibe

Is there any way possible that i would be able to get hold of a night time audio recording from inside the park, preferably a lengthy recording

Looong ago, one could buy a LP record named "Klanke van die Bosveld" ( Sounds of the Bushveld) with sound recordings of many animals found in Kruger. It started with the francolins in the early morning and then took the listener through the day end the ended with a lion roar at the end. I still have mine. Haven't seen anything similar.

Also "Nature's Melody" an LP record of the same vintage as "Klanke van die Bosveld" .

It was recorded by Dick Reucastle with narration by Hugh Rouse .

He had a nighttime recording of a Pel's fishing owl (at Pafuri) that was magic .

Tape recordings of these 2 LP's used to be on sale at Park's shops but I don't think this is the case anymore .

Just listened to them too, makes me very homesick!!!

The sound i love the most is a lion roaring in the distance. But when u are at a swiming pol that has no fence and there is a jackel calling next to u that is frilling. But i mis the wild....

The most amazing for me was at Berg-en-Dal lying awake at 3:30 with tent pitched right at the fence a chorus of lions and hyenas carried on till first light.

Take me back!!!

I have fond memories of camping in a tent in the open in KNP and being woken by a leopard rasping , it carried on for minutes before it faded as the leopard moved on .
It was probably my imagination , without a fence the sounds seemed clearer and louder .

Standing in the shower at Lower Sabie with the lions roaring was great, BUT my fondest memory is (not in KNP):

Walking to work one morning (at 04H00) I heard the Hyena just beyond my yard, and I know for a fact, we don't have any spotties, so it had to be the elusive Brown Hyena!! It was great, and I was late for work

I posted something under "Recommended Reading" about a CD called "Night Sounds a bushveld serenade by moonlight" I recently purchased through Africa Geographic Magazine. It runs for 40 minutes (without any conventional music clips!), so it is perhaps not as long as you would like it to be, but I found it delightful - perfect for jaded city-dwelling ears...

Hippo grunting is for us one of the most memorable animal sounds at night such as at Olifants Camp but at many other Kruger camps as well. Lions and hyena kicking up a racket at Orpen and Talamati are also high on the list of favourite Kruger night sounds .
