Hey!

I'm not talking about the cams specifically at all!

You cammers are a little weird...

Have seen them dipping at many troughs far away from cams!

That's all I know!

Hi Lionspoon & RP,

I've just been reading up on Hyena behaviour in vol. 1 of The Handbook of Mammals of the World. (carnivores)

It mentions that Hyenas often cache their food under water, as well as in thick scrub, and that they lie in water on hot days to keep cool. I could find no reference to them lying in water to keep cool due to heat generated by their digestion, (but that's not to say that this is not the reason they do this).

I know (both of it...), but you can't argue that both Satara and Orpen sport artifical waterholes.

Barcud, I tried to do some more research on the net, but I didn't find much and the source I found might be pretty inaccurate. :? Maybe it's indeed as simple as cooling down at hot days, as RP said as well. :hmz:

This hyena was spotted with her 2 cubs, however she was severely injured and could barely walk. This clan of hyenas also had an extremely close encounter with another Hyena closing in on the Cubs. Due to her injuries, the female merely urinated on the floor to mark her territory in an attempt to chase away the other Hyena.

Did you Know?
The Hyaena is closer related to cats than to dogs... :hmz:

I think they just love water as I have seen them
in wallow puddles in Masai Mara on relatively cool
days - also in Kruger I have seen them in waterholes
on winter's days that was quite cool for the KNP.

Hi to all interested in these spotted dogs,

Early May this year we spend some time in Balule and were lucky to find a nearby Hyena den.

Observing their social behavior instantly converted all of us to love these spotted dogs.

After that first morning's encounter they were top priority every morning - we would only go and feast on the rest of the bush after spending an hour or more with the Hyenas.

Go to "Travel Reports" of this website and scroll down to "Balule Safari" where we detail their social behavior with a number of photos supporting our observations.

All I can say after visiting the Hyena den daily is "What wonderful animals !"

Also, there is no more African bush-like sound than the nearby call of a Hyena at sun-set.

Hi.We'll be entering the kruger park at the Phalaborwa gate in January next year and I've heard that there is an active hyaena den nearby with many individuals. Can anyone here tell me the exact location of this den so we can check it out?
