Thanks TommyD for the heads up :D

This from the SA Planetarium

Geminid Meteors

Dec 13 / 14th

Look for the Geminid meteors ("shooting stars") during the early hours of Dec 14th. The view is better from further north, but South Africans should see at least one "shooting star" every five minutes, and some of them should be "fireballs".

Look towards the north-east (Gemini) from 10pm to dawn, but the view will improve after the Moon sets (at midnight), and the impact point of this dust stream is highest above the horizon (towards the north) at 2am. There's a bit of a mystery about the origin of this dust - see

Best place to watch from: dark skies

Better with binoculars / telescope? No - just your eyes!
