And are trying to book Ai-Ais for 14th September, but I cannot seem to get any reply to my emails does anyone have a phone number to book there??? We are going to be in Cape Town from 11th March so can phone then, (if theres any power!!!!) We are just staying local. If not we may see some members in September for a sundowner

Can anyone give the condition of the roads after all the heavy rain in this region and if any are closed and likely to remain so for a few weeks ?

Hi Foxy! The only thing I heard about the roads are that most of them are now only accessible to 4x4 vehicles. This was about 2 weeks ago. No idea what happened in the mean time.

Can anyone tell me why Helskloof entrance is closed? Is it due to all the rain over the last few months - roads impassible?

We're planning a 10 day trip to Richtersveld and will be spending 3 nights each at three different sites.
We're tight on time, but would consider sacrificing a day or 2 in the Richtersveld to cross the border to Namibia. Can anyone advise - does the area just across the border in Namibia offer something that the Richtersveld does not?

We intend visiting the Richtersveld early September 2006. Would like advise in respect of following from anyone who has been there recently:
Is it essential to have a second spare wheel?
Friends accompanying us have a Condor 4 x 2 - we have been told that it has sufficent ground clearance for the roads - is this correct? We will be going in our 4 x 4.
Would appreciate any comments and advise.

We are suddenly going to the RV at the end of the month for the looong weekend.

Anybody else going then?

What will the weather be like?

Is there an on line map with distances?

Can one buy a map with animals and birds like in Kruger, Addo etc?
Can I renew my wild card at the gate with my accumulated credits?

My parents are in the !Ai-!Ais/Richtersveld TP at the moment. Apparently the park has had exceptionaly good rain over the last week.

The roads have become mudpools and they are slipping and sliding all over.

To all of you going in the near future, please take note and be prepared, I would not even considering going to the park without a 4x4 vehicle.

My parents left the park on Sunday. Aparently the 8km stretch from De Hoop to Richtersberg took their group 3 hours. Numerous vehicles got stuck.

In some places the road was little more than just boulders, as the sand between them had been washed away.

Sounds like my sort of holiday!

We leave tomorrow and overnight in Port Nolloth.

When we return on Monday, I shall try to give an accurate account of things I would have liked to have known beforehand.

We were there part of the week it rained so much, Sendlingsdrift "main" street was like a lake. We had heavy rain 3 of the 5 nights we were in the RV, on the 6th night it was still raining so we booked into the chalets at Sendlingsdrift. Then next day we travelled just about the entire route from Sendlingsdrift around the bottom of RV via Ecksteenfontein to SA / Namibia border in rain / heavy drizzle and turned very cold. But for all that, how often will one see RV so wet.

Yes, it is essential to have 2 spare wheels esp if you are travelling down to camps along the river, ie De Hoop and Richtersberg. We did see a Condor make it over the very bad area- Rotom Pass I think is is called, but the rest not to bad, lots of driving in river beds, up and down hills -some roads good, others not so good.

Does anybody know if the border between Richtersveld and Ai-Ais is open yet???

No it is not, we were there last week - have to go down to Eksteenfontein (road not good - not a road for sedans), then up to Vioolsdrift, through border into Namibia.
