I can only think that it is because Venus is on the inside track. But are you really sure that we can't see a full disc? When Venus is on the other side of the sun then we should be able to see a (almost 100%) full disc, shouldn't we?

Or is it something to do with the plane again? Can't remember whether it is Venus that is, typical woman  off on a tangent again! That may influence it. :hmz:

No takers? Question too difficult for the cognoscenti? :hmz:

We cannot see Venus when it is on the far side of the Sun, which is the only time it would be full from our perspective. Venus is either behind the Sun's disk or appears so close to the Sun as to render it un-viewable.

Absolutely SPOT ON, Siobain!!

Bishop touched on the idea, but you have elucidated it correctly.
You are IT!

Bishop, I'm not sure about the female tangential influence (unique theory, though   ), but I'm absolutely sure that we cannot see a full disc of Venus Earth at any time, although it gets pretty full. Here is a great picture why this is so, as explained by Siobain (from www.ifa.hawaii.edu/~barnes/ast110_06/rots/0520a.jpg):

Thanks OWN and Bish! :D

Why is it, that in the Southern Hemisphere we will not see any planets near the south polar area, we will see them mostly in the northern part of the sky. And under which circumstances or conditions may we see a planet twinkle?

S, by the "south polar area", do you mean the southern celestial pole in the sky?

Planets follow the ecliptic, the path of the Earth about the Sun. The Sun itself follows a path through the sky which varies between 23.5 degrees north and south of the equator. Therefore, the planets do not move south of 23.5 degrees south of the equator, meaning that they will always be seen either close to the sun (inner planets) or much closer to the northern horizon than the southern (outer planets).

As to the second part of your question, Siobain, planets generally don't twinkle because they are close enough to earth to form a disc of light. However, if the atmospheric conditions are such that there is much turbulence in the atmosphere, then the light from a planet may dim and strengthen periodically, looking like it is twinkling.
