On a night Drive, this last December, on the Dirt Road to Tamboti Camp, we had stopped to let NightJar fly off road, and a Wild Cat pounced out of the bush next to the Road, and made short work of the NightJar. Very different type of "kill" to see. Very impressed! Like a minuture Leopard in action!

Have wondered if this the Tamboti Cat? It was about 500m from camp and not too concerned by vehicle.

As I usually visit in summer and am on the road by 04:30, I see one on about every 2 week visit. Would not call them scarce, but they are difficult to spot.

Hi Jannie,

In December 2003 I joined Marna on a 4 hour, and an all night observation, of a couple of her study subjects. Here's a picture I took of one of the cats (Juliet) during the all-night observation:

Do you know her research is going? As far as I can remember she was going to do a three year study so I guess she'll be presenting the results soon?

Saw eight wild cats on one night drive at Letaba in Dec. 2001!
Sounds incredible, but that was all we saw all night!

Wow, those were interesting pics Jannie, thanks for posting them. :)

While I always feel sorry for animals that are darted/tranquilised (terminology for this case?), I understand the need for it. It's very evident from your pics that the people involved take great care in not causing the Cat any additional and unnecessary discomfort. They seem to be working very gently with it. Great comfort to me personally. :D

 Perhaps a distant Kgalagadi relative?

I have only seen one Wildcat ever near Pretoriuskop and these pics just made me realise how similar-looking they are to house cats. Just bigger, otherwise exactly the same!

Had two seperate sightings of them on the nightdrive at Satara .. both were next to the road ... we watched one of them as he was busy hunting .. fascinating how close their behaviour is to a house cat .. or is that vice versa?? :?

Nice photo's!

Just a little question that pops up, you mention litter of two, litter of 3. Normal housecats manage around 6 per litter. Do the AWC's normally have only 2~3 kittens?
