Also found in Satara June 2005.

They are very tame & with some patience you can get real close to them.

I ticked-off this splendid bird for the first time in my garden last week! I live in Pretoria, over 400km away from KNP!

Yes, they are present in PTA(Home of SANP HQ). Saw a group of 5 birds together once. :wink:

I battled to get a pic of the bird itself because it was so skittish. But I managed to photograph it's nest which is known as 'the old man's beard'.

Eastern Blackheaded Oriole
Oriolus larvatus

Easy to identify - Black head, yellow body.

Size: 24 cm.
Sexes: Alike.
Juvenile: Dark brown head with flecks of black, lacks the red bill.
Habitat: Mature woodland, mostly broadleafed, forest edge and exotic.
Status: Common.
Call: Whistle, 'pooodleeoo' and harsh 'kweeer'.

The aloes at Lower-Sabie are in bloom and, at the moment a very good place for bird-photography. We had many visits of various birds.

Stunning picture Lizet - please show us more. I was wondering what is the exact flowering period of the aloes? I know it is winter time, but when does it generally start and when does it end? Might be useful for birders to know this, as it is a good time to be in the Kruger camps.

I am not really sure when exatly the aloes start and ends but it could depend on the water it recieves in summer? This was taken the last few days of July but my aloes at home(Pta) started early in June already.

I know that the Impala-lily stop flowering if you water them too much in winter, happened this winter with ours.
