Excellent camera, and operator, Elsa!

Witsand at last has something to offer!

I'm so jealous, and you had brilliant sightings, and reported back so well in the relevant threads!

(Let that be a lesson in karma to us! )

This is "awards" stuff, IMHO!

Great pics Elsa! Hope to find them as adults maybe with their own litter almost on their way, when I visit Mahonie Loop for the first time December!

Some lovely pics everyone!

Interestingly on the property I worked in the Sabi Sands, we had 1 cracal sighting in 2 years. Now in the last year there have been many more than this, perhaps 15 sightings.
It is well documented how animal numbers fluctuate and I have seen it with Black Backed Jackal, Wildebeest and obviously Rhino and Elephant in the KNP as well as a couple of others. My point is that although you need an official scientific study to prove this, there certainly seems to be a marked increase in numbers of carcal and I wouldn't be surprised if forumites will see them more this year in KNP (at least Southern & Central) compared to others!

After spending over 120 nights at Kruger we are yet to see a Caracal. It took my uncle over a thousand days to see his first, close to Skukuza. And my one brother was lucky to see one just outside the park as he was about to enter Orpen Gate. Yet my other brother was visiting a friend the other day in Eshowe and, whilst having a cup of tea on the verandah, spotted this beauty in a tree in the front garden. It stayed there all morning and seemed totally unfazed by the “crowd” that gathered just metres away. And this was in the middle of a residential area!

My wife and I had a sighting in our last trip to kruger. It had me breathless. we were behind a series of cars about 100 metres ahead of us, when something came to sit between us. The guys in front did not see her at all. It was a mother and kitten. Managed to get a few photos but not brilliant so I have not thought a lot about them. But now that I see how hard it is to see them I thought when I get home from this Kruger trip I had better pull them out again and post them

I must admit when photographing them I was shaking with excitment which probably limited the excellence of the photographs But they did not disappear totally from sight for a few minutes

I have one week in Kruger from tomorrow Hope I see them tomorrow

Regards

Every day in Kruger is magical to us whether we see a butterfly all day or the Big 5...
But on one occasion we had such a stunning day I have to notch it up as my best day in Kruger ever.

The highlight of the day for us was late afternoon drive back to Balule camp we came across a particularly noisy family of Francolins along side the road.

My fiancé ever the eagle eyed self proclaimed bush tracker stopped to see what the fuss was about and to our absolute shock saw a huge caracal, with the obviously threatened Francolins running around it.

Before i could even see what happened the caracal grabbed one and then walked off into the bush with the francolin in its mouth.

He then stopped a few metres in and proceed to devour the whole bird whilst the now really pee’d off family squabbled around him – trying to recover their family member ???

I managed to get a few pics, but not the best quality as it was with one of those al chepo’ 1st edition digital cameras

But an amazing sighting we will NEVER forget and the only caracal we’ve been lucky enough to see in the park

I've been really lucky with Caracals! Several in KTP and Addo on night drives and a few good daytime sightings as well, but this is BY FAR the most special.

These were taken on my very last night in South Africa in August. I had wanted to spend my last day at WCNP doing some birdwatching (which was awesome btw).

By 4pm the weather had turned and it started to rain heavily, so we decided it was time to go. About 1km before the gate, my friend in the backseat yells 'stop! it's one of those cats!' I hadn't seen anything.

I threw the car into reverse expecting to scare away anything that might have been there. All of my caracal sightings have been very brief and they disappear so quickly!

This one was happy to hang around for almost 15 minutes before it got up and calmly walked away over the dune. I couldn't believe it!

The photos aren't great because it was very dark and rainy, but this was an experience i'll never forget and the best going-away present South Africa ever could have given me.
