Hmmm.... H.E. It sounds like you already have some Nikon gear so that would be the way to go. Most of your mid to top end Nikons can still use lenses dating back to the introduction of the F mount (all except four specific lenses, if memory serves me correctly).

The D90 upwards have very solid feels and are extremely rugged. The D300 and upwards have magnesium alloy bodies to boot.

I have to agree with DQ that Canon is cheaper (Read CHEAPER  ) but I have found Nikon to provide better quality overall. All depends on your budget and how serious you are.

Holy moly guys, but first let me thank for your eager response!!
B'nuts to think I had F mount lenses which the burglar left me sitting
with, could never replace the body and eventually just sold everything.
quitting photography.
DQ I almost fell flat on my back,- the figures you quoted.
Scipio sorry but I honestly thought you were pulling my leg.
D'dan currently I have no choice at all, a box camera will suffice.
Josh you have a point, 2nd hand!
Michel I hear what your'e saying, at the end of the day brand names
don't neccesarely produce good pic's.
Bert mind if I borrow one of them cameras of your's? Seems you have
some and can't use them all at the same time.
M'rutti like I said I have a handle to begin with and it dawned upon me
that I have rows and rows, canisters full with slides. Maybe I should
concentrate on further processing these first. Any suggestions/advice
folks and thanks a lot for your support!!

HE, I've got approx 12 000 slides that are waiting for my scanner and I already know I'll never get down to it. Too many and now only scan a few that I am really interested in, the rest I view every once and a while.

If you are into wildlife and game parks then you CANNOT remain without a camera! :naughty:

M'rutti best game viewing gets done without cameras at hand or at least
that be my experience, therefore can somebody please invent a scanner
that can copy pictures from the brain, ironically speaking! Indeed you are right always have a camera at hand when game viewing.

HE, I worked as a safari guide in Kenya and Tanzania for years and some of my best wildlife scenes were seen during that period and I was NOT into photography and so today no pictures. Great memories but just not enough to fully appreciate what I saw.

Did some window shopping today. Hardly touched the
camera and decided thats the one for me, body only
so far. Now to choose a set of lenses. Fixed focal or
zoom. Fixed focal give better sharpness and bigger apertures, though zoom lenses provide better framing.
Any comments and what to look for. Does anyone have experience dealing with 2nd hand equipment?

Steer clear of Nikon! :slap:

Guys, why don't you tell HE that while Nikon and Canon are the same qualitywise, pricewise Canon is the way to go?
He's (or is that HE is? ) going to the parks, so will want a long lens, at least 400mm. Now compare this:

Nikkor AF-S 400mm f/2.8G VR IF-ED Black Lens R 98,312.00
Canon EF 400 mm f 2.8 L II IS USM Lens R 82,338.00
(That's at a well known shop in SA)

A difference of R16000!

Canon HE, Canon.....

I couldn't agree with you more. Both my father and I use Canons. He has a 5D and I a 30D. Canon is definitely the way to go.

Ranred it will be a D90 body. I now need to establish
what I require in lenses etc. Did macro photography
as well and had the bellows for that too. At the end
of it all I need to find a source, a bottomless pit, to
fund all this. Who knows maybe it will just remain to
be a dream.
