Hi,

My name's Warren and I'm an avid lover of all things outdoors. In my free time I enjoy photography, fly fishing, travelling through Africa, camping and basically anything outdoors.

As a result I'm often out in the wild and have a great urge to give something back.

The honorary ranger option looks fantastic, but after doing some research I'm not 100% sure its the correct route (if I were to be accepted that is). The reason I say this is that I live in the Durban area which is still controlled by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. In fact, I see the nearest SAN park is Golden Gate where they are building a vulture hide. Exciting! Anyway, do the KZN boys really get a good chance to be involved? Sadly KZN Wildlife doesn't seem to offer a similar program.

Should I pursue other options? Or is the honorary ranger route a good choice. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know there are a number of KZN folk in the HR movement, but you would have to go to another province to do duties.

Last week there was an HR from the Ezemvelo KZN movement here in camp. I found out who he was because he had their magnetic decals on his car. Turned out he is also a guide, and works a lot at Yellowwood Park. So although not strictly SANpatks related, you may find an outlet for your interests in that direction too.

Warren I think they are a good option. The KAN region of the SANParks HRs do great work. Why not contact them and have a chat to them? Contact details, and info, found here.

In fact, KZN was awarded the region of the year award at the previous HR Indaba. I know that they have some activities in their local non SANParks parks as well, much like some of the HRs in the Gauteng area.

I'm a KZN HR - and enjoy the time spent with our " Group". working in the parks does involve a lot of travel, I'll PM you with my details if you want to know more.
