Kgalagadi: DRIVES - Q and A

Unread postby 3aces » Tue Aug 10, 2010 11:05 pm

Hello everybody,

Searched the forums but could not find the answers to my questions and I also emailed the reception of KTP, but have not received a reaction yet. So maybe anyone can help me out?

I saw that there are sunrise and sunset game drives that can be booked in TR, but there also seem to be a day drive.

Does anyone know what time this game drive starts (in September). And is there a stop during the drive (e.g. when nature calls?).

Thank you very much for your help.

we've been to TR four times and we were never ever able to figure out how and when they conduct drives and when not - opposed to KNP the service is absolutely unpredicatable (also at Nossob and Mata Mata)...more than once we arrived at lunch time, asked if we could book a drive, were told that so far they had no reservations and that we should return later which always meant the drive would not happen at all...I mean if they did not have any reservations by the time we got there, why did they not take ours?

you just have to be lucky to be there on a day they are willing to a conduct a drive

I would do self day drives and book an evening/night drive. There is a minimum number that they do it for.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

that's what they tell you but that's not what they do - they neither tell you what that minimum number is nor do they take your name down to start reaching that minimum number

Strange, that's not been my experience, ice. When I asked, I was told that the minimum number for a drive was four. At the time when I signed up, I was told that there were only three signed up so far, so the drive would only happen if another person signed up, so I might have returned to camp to find that the drive wasn't going out. However, I was lucky as another couple did sign up, so we were five and had a brilliant drive.

well, all I say is that we could never figure out whose names they write down to start reaching thast minimum number and whose not...compared to KNP, the service at KTP is certainly unreliable

Ice: I’m sorry to hear about your bad experience regarding the game drives. Please note that I have just returned to the Kgalagadi a week ago after a loooong brake.

I’m definitely going to have a look into the situation as all activities in the KTP are my babies and I would like to see them grow and also that all guests visiting the park does have the opportunity to experience the wonderful park at night or early mornings.

Please feel free to PM me with any detail regarding the situation on the drives as I will attend to it and sort it out.

Thanks again.

Full Day Game Drive at KTP

Unread postby ice » Tue Jan 11, 2011 12:59 pm

Kgalagadi Guru was so kind to tell me that KTP now also offers full day game drives. Could somebody who already participated in one of the drives describe some more details, like start and return times, cost and if breaks (with or without food) are included...

thanks

Ice,

The guests who normally participate in this activity are guests who visit the park in sedan vehicles and they don’t want to drive on the sand roads with hired vehicles.
The full day drive starts 30 minutes before the gates open and lasts for 6 hours, there are stops made where you could get out and stretch some legs and also we stop at toilets.
The costs for an adult is R 275, 00 and R 138, 00 for a child, you are more than welcome to take food and beverages with on the drive. The day drives are very relaxed as the guide does have 6 hours to explain nature to you and certain phenomenon as well.

Hope this helps

Glad you did as I wanted to start a thread regarding the activities we offer, so now I can just post it here (not to hijack your thread)

Kgalagadi offers the following activities:

Morning Walks (Maximum 8 guests per walk)
Afternoon walks (Max 8 guests per walk) - popular in the winter months.
Morning Drives
Sunset drives
Night Drives
Full Day Drives
Nossob Eco- 4x4 Trail (3 nights sleeping out in the dunes)
!Xerry Wilderness Trail (2 Nights sleeping out inthe dunes)

There are quite a few new adventure activities I’m working on and maybe we should run a poll to see what the interest from the forum would be and if the people would be interested to participate in such activities.
