The Verreaux's Eagles at Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden.
In the first few photos the female took a rest on the top (old) nest, after they did fly-overs for quite some time, being harassed by the ever-present and irritating Pied Crows.

I've seen the male taking back new vegetation (normally green leaves) to the nest. Here he came flying closer with the stick....but dropped it shortly before reaching the nest - thanks to the crows. He looked a lot like Harry Potter on his broom

I saw this Verreaux's Eagle at Marakele.

According to Shangaan and Shona mythology, the Verreaux's Eagle was seen as a messenger of their ancestors.

During a recent trail in the Makuleke concession, we came accross a Verreaux Eagle near Hutwini feeding off an immature white backed vulture. It appeared to be a fresh kill which led us to the conclusion that the eagle killed the vulture not long before our arrival.

I am not aware of any previous records of Verreaux Eagle killing vultures but given that their nesting sites overlap, one should perhaps not be that surprised.

According to one reference work I consulted, Black Eagles will use the same nest over and over again, each year adding new building material to the existing nest. This in some cases result in the nest being built up as high as 4m from the base .

I took this photo (and the one in my avatar) in 2008 in KZN.
