Thanks guys, I am a novice here, my camera I am using now is a sony power shot A450, lens 5.4 - 17.3mm. I am still learning and what you guys said will help me, maybe I should look at cash crusaders or one off the second hand shops. I am looking at not more than R8000.00 for camera and lense.

Get a Nikon D50 and Sigma 170-500mm second hand. Should be within the price range

Prices have dropped again recently. There have been a few D80s at R4000 the past month. You could probably get a D80 and Bigma for R8k now

That's a big drop.

But if I said that I'm going to change again the SO will probably whack me over the head with my 17- 500.

Have had a bit of a look around and a D80 with a sigma 70 - 300mm will go for R 5000.00 over here now.

I have both and they are great!
D50 great camera and easy to use. Excellent results all round. Have a look at my Kenya pictures (WWW below!), all taken with the D50.
D80 is a more complete camera, a little bit complicated by still excellent results.

I personally favour the D50 and D90.

Can't afford a D90 :(
Reason I'm looking for a D80 over a D50 is the menu and controls

I would go for a D80 if the price is right but even for a D50.
If you want to get a power pack no hassle for the D80 but difficult to find for the D50.

Looks like I was wrong about the D80 menu and controls. I thought it was the newer type, like the D40, but it looks like its the older type, like the D50?

Greetings all
Consider a second hand Nikon D200 they are now affordable and great value for a semi-professional camera.

I use a second hand D3 and second hand D200 and just been forced to hand over my older second hand D70 to one of the kids.
