Last August I went on a Bush Braai at Letaba with my wife, sons (18 & 20) and my brother. Since we came all the way from the U.S., I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity and I'm glad we did it. We had a great time. My family enjoyed having dinner with the guide to pepper him with questions about himself, Kruger, animals, and SA. The food was good and plentiful. Because the site was away from the camp, you get a sunset drive on the ride out and a night drive on the way back. It was a little pricey and with tables, chairs, linen, and servers, it was hardly rustic dining, but a fun adventure and a nice meal. I'd say a Bush Braai is well worth doing once.

I am currently in contact with Sanparks as I'm trying to arrange an evening Bush Braai from P'kop. I have just been quoted R530 per person which doesn't include drinks. This is one heck of a lot of dosh especially at the appalling exchange rate we're getting these days!

We went on an evening bush braai from Olifants last year (cost R430 pp + drinks) which was a great experience. The food wasn't brilliant but for me the food's not the important part as long as it's edible, that's not the point of going on one. It's the occasion - the darkness (we have too much light pollution here in Europe), the silence, the paper lanterns, the animal sounds, the stars and the cheerful staff. I think it's worth doing at least once.

With regard to the menu, we had quite a variety of meat, potatoes, pap and some salads. For pudding there was some fresh fruit salad (chopped apples) and cream. Because we were celebrating a 21st birthday I had arranged in advance for a cake (complete with inscription) to be presented and the staff sang 'happy birthday' beautifully.

Have just seen your post Dotty, thanks for the info! As a matter of interest what were you charged?

12 of us did a bush braii from Skukuza this last month. We really enjoyed it. When you consider that you get a sunset drive, a meal, and a night drive all combined, the cost is not as bad as it originally seemed. Since most of us (from USA) won't return, it seemed that it was "must do" for us!

I have enquired about the cost of the bush breakfast at Mopani for a wedding gift for friends. The cost is R500pp which is pretty expensive. Has anyone been on a bush breakfast and do they feel its fair value for money. Would a bush braai be a better option? They will be staying at Mopani in early September.
Any input woild be appreciated.

We decided to close our eyes to the cost and go for a Bush braai at Lower Sabie Will I do it again -

Patrick was our guide, and made the drives (sunset and then night) even more enjoyable with his vast knowledge, the set up and food was lovely, and Martie was the ranger with the big gun who escorted us to "powder our noses"

What did we see?

Honey Badger
Black backed Jackal
Puffadder with full tummy
Golden orb spider
Lesser spotted genet
Greater spotted genet
civet
Cheetah mum called all night long (think she lost her baby)

I had arranged it as a surprise and everyone played the game, and you should have seen the faces when we stopped! It was worth every penny/cent

This all sounds very wonderful and would love to do it.

It needs to be taken into consideration that the braii cost includes not only for the food, but fuel, running the vehicle and pay for the staff, maybe even overtime. Then there are the chairs, tables etc., candles, cooking and preparing the food. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Someone mentioned "powdering their nose". Does that mean for women going into the bush or, do they have a portaloo? Only reason asking, I powdered my nose once in the bush and was absolutely terrified. As I would love to take my mother, perhaps she would have difficulty.

Missings.a! ... a normal sunset/night drive is R160 and that covers the expenses of fuel, rangers etc. To pay R360 just for the meal, (excluding the drive) is too expensive, especially if one is paying in Rands. Restaurants also has rent, staff overheads etc. and I'm not too sure that an average meal in a restaurant would come to that per head.
I've done a bush braai (at this stage cannot give details), for R300-00 and that included the drive. That was acceptable to all the parties and there was plenty to eat and lots left over.
Yes, its the experience thats important and I can tell it was great, and I would do it again at the R300 price.
We are all hoping that it will be permanent in the near future.

with regard to powdering our noses, we had the bushbraai at a well known picnic spot/ birdhide and all the normal facilities were there, only no electricity and we had to walk a couple of metres with flashlights - very civilised. But as my Bil said "The first time he has been escorted "to spend a Penny" by a lady with a BIG gun
The braai lasts as long as you reasonably like, obviously if you sit around too long the subsequent "night drive" will be shorter. We opted for more time spent on the drive back and had a lovely time.

I also initially thought the cost was high but as it was a "once in a lifetime" trip decided to grin and pay up. Now I know it was worth every penny. We had a sunset drive (R160 ? ) a night drive (R 140 ? ) and a wonderful three course meal well prepared and beautifully presented at approx R 180 per head - several of us (including me ) went back for seconds. We also had two rangers to chat to at our leisure and the enjoyment of a private party - no fake camo or khaki ( for those who have had a drive spoilt by obnoxious guests you will understand - as Patrick said he has been asked why Sanparks do not mow the grass to improve the viewing )
It was money well spent and I will bankrupt myself again to repeat the experience.

We did a bush braai at Pretoriouskop in March.The drive was done first (Pat was the guide) We left P'kop at 5pm and returned around 9-30pm/10pm. There are a few photos my Trip report here It was just the 4 of us and a very specal night

We did a Bush Braai fro BnD and they set up a special loo tent with portaloo. You do have an 'escort' too. You are certainly well looked after!

The 2 i visited had a real toilet
No light, so take a torch and there is always a ranger to first check out the toilet for your own safety.

Braai is with two armed guides.
The one taking you to the venue
And one already there waiting with the cook and food.
