How to... Make a Link

Unread postby DuQues » Thu Jan 05, 2006 12:54 pm

How to link?

As seen on the forum almost all links are just clickable words, and not long html-code. Looks nice, but how to do that?

Not too difficult, just some getting used to. Let's take an example: http://www.sanparks.org/webcams/

That is the address to the webcams, which we will use as an example for now.

Copy that from the address bar of your browser, and go to the post you are currently writing.
Paste the address into the post, select it again, and hit the button marked URL in the righthand top corner above the area you are typing in.

Notice that if you hover over the URL button the syntax (or how to write the code) appears just above the posting area. You can use this as an aide.

You should now have :

Code: Select all

[url]http://www.sanparks.org/webcams/[/url]

Well, part one is done, but it looks the same in preview? Correct. Now comes the "tricky bit". Replace the end bracket (]) of [url]with an equalsign (=), and place that same bracket (]) before the[/url] code. It should read like this now:

Code: Select all

[url=http://www.sanparks.org/webcams/][/url]

Now we have to give a description of the link, in this case Webcams will do. Type that between the two ][ brackets so that you end up with this:

Code: Select all

[url=http://www.sanparks.org/webcams/]Webcams[/url]

Done! The link looks like this:

Sat at home missing the bush? Well just for you SANParks have provided webcams that will take you there.

How to jump to posts

But how do you know what address to include in your link? Well the topic lists on the forum are links. All you need to do is to right-click the link and you will get what is known as a Context Menu. Click the Copy Shortcut* and Paste it into your post.

Image

Then follow the instructions in the first post to turn it into your own link.

And did you that when you open a thread the title is also a link so you can do the same.?

Jump to a Specific Post

In addition you can also link to a specific post. If you look at the lefthand topcorner of the post, just before it says Posted you'll see a little icon: Image

Right-click that, choose Copy Shortcut* and proceed as above.

* Internet Explorer option. For those using Firefox use Copy Link Location and for Chrome its Copy Link Address

The Hard Way

All messages have a number, and you can jump to them if you know that number. Now how to acquire that number? Well, that is a hard one. If it is the last post in a topic the number will be in the address bar, like this:

Code: Select all

http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=106840#106840

You can use that in the way described above. But if it is not the last post you will have to fiddle around. Copy the code from the last post into your post, and then move your mouse over the Quote button of the post you want to link to.
In the bottomleft corner of your browser you will see this code:

Code: Select all

http://www.sanparks.org/forums/posting.php?mode=quote&p=106833

(If you click you will see it in the addressbar.) That is the number of the post you need. Now edit the code which you had pasted to read as follows:

Code: Select all

http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=106833#106833

(You have to edit the number twice!) and make a link of it. Not recommended unless you really know what you are doing.

This is the one I use when I want to link to a specific post. If an address like the one above is showing I simply scroll up the page and click on the title of the topic. (Above the newtopic and postreply buttons.) The addressbar gives an address denoting topicnumber (t=) and startnumber &start=):

Code: Select all

http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5914&start=0

Just ignore and delete the rest of the code (&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=), you don't need that.
The important bit is the start= code. Just enter the number of the post in there, and you will get the page starting with that numbers post as the first one. So if you are on page 2 of a topic, and the post you want to refer to is the fifth, your start= should read start=19. (There are 15 posts to a page, and numbering starts at 0.)
Your code should read like this then:

Code: Select all

http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5914&start=19

It is easily checked if it works by pasting it in the addressbar and hitting enter.
And now just make a link of it as described in the first post.
