Regarding where to look for Aardvark , I know of healthy populations in 2 certain Nature Reserve's , in the Eastern Cape. Sightings are not uncommon during winter daytime , although I have observed them only in the morning hours and only in winter; never in summer during the day ; my guess is that they are warming up , as they were not foraging while I have observed them. I have observed them during night time at *****, while they are foraging and digging into termite mounds - on one occasion I saw an aardwolf visiting some of the freshly broken termite mounds. There seems to be a healthy population of aardwolf in ***** , neighbouring farms and private reserves in the area , this judging only and sadly on the frequent number of roadkills of aardwolf. They seem quite 'rustig" and oblivious to humans when approached on foot. O'K , good luck , hope this is of some help

I am visiting South Africa next year going to Kgalagadi and then down to the Eastern cape where the family is living and I would so love to see some Anteaters especially and Aardvark, aardwolf and the pangolin.

Would love to hear from anyone that has seen them, especially aardvarks, recently we will be travelling throught the Northern Cape and then to J Bay I will go to Addo for a look there too.

Thanks. AA

Welcome to the forums AA! :yaya:

Hi All!
The only sighting I had was not in KNP but in a non-Sanparks park.
Was staking out the water-hole at Kwa-Maritane Hide in May 2007- Cold and alone but thats what we do I guess! Heard a loud rustling of bushes at about 22:00. thought something big was comig... then this Aardvark came out- looked around, grunted and walked off. All of 20 seconds but was amazed and knew this chance sighting was special!

Yep, Thursday before last, 7h43 p.m., on the junction of the H1-9 and the Pafuri Camp access road. Close up and very relaxed.

I'm afraid I have to disappoint you all, I don't bring a camera on game drives. I prefer to enjoy what I see, hear and smell, instead of having to worry about shutter speed, white balance and aperture.

By the way, the head ranger at Pafuri Camp has been working there for three years now, and has conducted any number of night drives, but he has yet to see and aardvark in the area.

Hey, sorry to make you all  ...

Saw one on a Sunset Drive outside Lower Sabie on the S28 in December, just north of the turning to the Nhlanganzwani Dam on the right hand side of the road. It was fairly close, but unfortunately quickly disappeared into its burrow, never to be seen again, so no photos. The guide on the trip, Patrick, had been in Kruger for 4 years and it was his first sighting. Apparently MJ (other LS guide) had seen it the previous week too.

Good luck to those going that way soon!

Pat

Well, next time take a small digital camera...you'd be making history, as there are no known tourist pics of Aardvark in Kruger as far as I know!
